## What it does

This skill provides guidelines for running Vitest in TypeScript and Vite environments. It includes configuration templates for `vitest.config.ts`, script definitions for `package.json`, and TypeScript setup.

The reference covers module mocking with `vi.mock`, method spying with `vi.spyOn`, and fake timer management using `vi.useFakeTimers`. It also details static type testing patterns via `expectTypeOf` and `assertType`.

Using global test functions requires adding `vitest/globals` to `tsconfig.json`. Without that entry, TypeScript fails to resolve symbols like `describe` and `expect`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill vitest -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/vitest/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/vitest/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill vitest -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/vitest/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill vitest -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/vitest/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills vitest
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/vitest/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill vitest -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/typescript/testing/vitest
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/vitest/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill vitest -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/typescript/testing/vitest/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- configure vitest.config.ts for node or jsdom environments
- verify TypeScript types with expectTypeOf and assertType
- mock external module dependencies using vi.mock
- test timed callbacks using vi.useFakeTimers

## Example prompts
- Generate a vitest.config.ts file with v8 coverage reporters
- Write unit tests for the UserService class mocking fetchUser
- Create a type assertion test using expectTypeOf for my User model

# Vitest - Modern TypeScript Testing

## Overview

Vitest is a next-generation test framework powered by Vite, designed for modern TypeScript/JavaScript projects. It provides blazing-fast test execution through HMR-based test running, native ESM support, and first-class TypeScript integration.

**Key Features**:
- ⚡ **Vite-native**: Instant HMR-based test execution (10-100x faster than Jest)
- 🎯 **TypeScript-first**: Built-in TypeScript support, no configuration needed
- 🔄 **ESM-native**: Native ES modules, async/await, top-level await
- 🧪 **Jest-compatible**: Compatible API for easy migration
- 📸 **Snapshot testing**: Built-in snapshot support
- 🎨 **Component testing**: React Testing Library, Vue Test Utils integration
- 📊 **Coverage**: Built-in v8/c8 coverage (faster than Istanbul)
- 🌐 **UI mode**: Beautiful web UI for test debugging

**Installation**:
```bash
npm install -D vitest
# TypeScript types (usually auto-detected)
npm install -D @vitest/ui  # Optional: UI mode
```

## Basic Setup

### 1. Configure Vitest

**vitest.config.ts**:
```typescript
import { defineConfig } from 'vitest/config';
export default defineConfig({
  test: {
    globals: true,           // Use describe/it/expect globally
    environment: 'node',     // or 'jsdom' for DOM testing
    coverage: {
      provider: 'v8',        // or 'istanbul'
      reporter: ['text', 'json', 'html'],
      exclude: [
        'node_modules/',
        'dist/',
        '**/*.test.ts',
        '**/*.spec.ts',
      ],
    },
    include: ['**/*.{test,spec}.{ts,tsx}'],
    exclude: ['node_modules', 'dist', '.idea', '.git', '.cache'],
  },
});
```

### 2. TypeScript Configuration

**tsconfig.json**:
```json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "types": ["vitest/globals"]  // For global describe/it/expect
  }
}
```

**Alternative (without globals)**:
```typescript
import { describe, it, expect } from 'vitest';
```

### 3. Package.json Scripts

```json
{
  "scripts": {
    "test": "vitest run",              // CI mode (single run)
    "test:watch": "vitest",            // Watch mode (default)
    "test:ui": "vitest --ui",          // UI mode
    "test:coverage": "vitest run --coverage"
  }
}
```

## Core Testing Patterns

### Basic Test Structure

```typescript
import { describe, it, expect, beforeEach, afterEach } from 'vitest';
