# spring-boot

A skill that gives your agent a Spring Boot 3.x reference: auto-configuration, dependency injection, REST controllers, Actuator. Useful when you write Java services.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent a Spring Boot 3.x reference: project layout, core annotations, the `controller`, `service` and `repository` layers, DTOs and request validation. Code samples come with it, plus a separate `quality-antipatterns.md` file covering common mistakes.

You need Java 17 or newer and Maven or Gradle. Projects are usually generated from Spring Initializr, then started with `./mvnw spring-boot:run`. The skill is not user-invocable — it loads into context when the agent touches Java code.

Dependency injection is shown through constructors rather than fields, which stands out if you are used to `@Autowired` on a field. On an older Spring Boot 2.x codebase some samples will not compile, because Java 17 is a hard requirement here.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill spring-boot -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/spring-boot/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/spring-boot/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill spring-boot -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/spring-boot/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill spring-boot -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/spring-boot/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills spring-boot
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/spring-boot/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill spring-boot -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/java/frameworks/spring-boot
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/spring-boot/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill spring-boot -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/java/frameworks/spring-boot/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- lay out a project into controller, service and repository layers
- write a REST controller with validated request DTOs
- switch dependency injection to constructor style
- wire up Actuator for health checks and metrics
- generate a project skeleton from Spring Initializr

## Example prompts
- Create a Spring Boot project with web, data-jpa and actuator dependencies
- Add a REST controller for users with validation on CreateUserRequest
- Rewrite UserService to use constructor injection

# Spring Boot 3.x - Production-Ready Java Framework

## Overview

Spring Boot is an opinionated Java framework for building production-ready applications with minimal configuration. It provides auto-configuration, embedded servers, and production-ready features like health checks and metrics.

**Key Features**:
- Auto-configuration (sensible defaults)
- Embedded servers (Tomcat, Jetty, Undertow)
- Dependency Injection with @Autowired
- Spring Data JPA for database access
- Spring Security for authentication/authorization
- Actuator for production monitoring
- Built-in testing support

**Requirements**:
- Java 17+ (Spring Boot 3.x requires Java 17 minimum)
- Maven or Gradle

**Quick Start**:
```bash
# Create project from Spring Initializr
curl https://start.spring.io/starter.zip \
  -d type=maven-project \
  -d language=java \
  -d bootVersion=3.2.0 \
  -d dependencies=web,data-jpa,postgresql,lombok,actuator \
  -d name=myapp \
  -o myapp.zip && unzip myapp.zip
# Run the application
cd myapp
./mvnw spring-boot:run
```
