# kysely

A skill that teaches your agent Kysely: types from schema to query result, migrations, transactions. Useful when an ORM gets in the way but untyped raw SQL is worse.

## What it does

The skill hands the agent a reference for Kysely, a TypeScript SQL query builder. You describe tables as interfaces, and the types for selecting, inserting and updating follow from them: `Selectable`, `Insertable`, `Updateable`. A chain like `.selectFrom().where().execute()` then returns a typed result.

Covered inside: joins, aggregates with `groupBy` and `having`, subqueries through `exists` and `in`, CTEs including recursive ones. Inserts with `returningAll`, updates and deletes are there too, plus raw SQL via `sql` for whatever the builder does not express. Migrations and plugins (CTE, JSON, geospatial) round it out.

Kysely compiles to plain SQL, so there is no runtime overhead. Dialects are PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite and MSSQL, and the driver is a separate install: `pg`, `mysql2` or `better-sqlite3`. The skill is not user-invocable — the agent pulls it in when you write database code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill kysely -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/kysely/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill kysely -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill kysely -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills kysely
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/kysely/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill kysely -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/typescript/data/kysely
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/kysely/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill kysely -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- define table interfaces and get query types out of them
- join several tables without losing type inference
- compute grouped aggregates with a `having` filter
- move queries off an ORM onto a query builder
- insert a row and get it back with `returningAll`

## Example prompts
- define the users and posts schema for Kysely and write a typed select with a join
- rewrite this query in Kysely using a recursive CTE
- add a Kysely migration for the posts table

# Kysely - Type-Safe SQL Query Builder

## Overview

Kysely is a type-safe TypeScript SQL query builder that provides end-to-end type safety from database schema to query results. Unlike ORMs, it generates plain SQL and gives you full control while maintaining perfect TypeScript inference.

**Key Features**:
- Complete type inference (schema → queries → results)
- Zero runtime overhead (compiles to SQL)
- Database-agnostic (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, MSSQL)
- Migration system included
- Plugin ecosystem (CTEs, JSON, geospatial)
- Raw SQL integration when needed

**Installation**:
```bash
npm install kysely
# Database driver (choose one)
npm install pg              # PostgreSQL
npm install mysql2          # MySQL
npm install better-sqlite3  # SQLite
```

## Quick Start

### 1. Define Database Schema Types

```typescript
import { Generated, Selectable, Insertable, Updateable } from 'kysely';
// Table interface (all columns)
interface UserTable {
  id: Generated<number>;
  email: string;
  name: string | null;
  created_at: Generated<Date>;
  updated_at: Date;
}
interface PostTable {
  id: Generated<number>;
  user_id: number;
  title: string;
  content: string;
  published: Generated<boolean>;
  created_at: Generated<Date>;
}
// Database interface
interface Database {
  users: UserTable;
  posts: PostTable;
}
// Type-safe query result types
type User = Selectable<UserTable>;
type NewUser = Insertable<UserTable>;
type UserUpdate = Updateable<UserTable>;
```

### 2. Create Database Instance

```typescript
import { Kysely, PostgresDialect } from 'kysely';
import { Pool } from 'pg';
const db = new Kysely<Database>({
  dialect: new PostgresDialect({
    pool: new Pool({
      host: process.env.DB_HOST,
      database: process.env.DB_NAME,
      user: process.env.DB_USER,
      password: process.env.DB_PASSWORD,
      max: 10,
    }),
  }),
});
```

### 3. Type-Safe Queries

```typescript
// SELECT with full type inference
const users = await db
