## What it does

This skill establishes clear conventions for executing terminal tasks during agent sessions. It enforces sequential chaining with `&&` instead of semicolons, maintains environment state via `export`, and isolates background servers with `&`. Interactive operations like `git rebase -i` or `git add -i` are barred because interactive prompts hang the execution environment.

Automation relies on three lifecycle hooks: `pretooluse`, `stop`, and `user-prompt-submit`. Placing validation inside `.claude-hook-pretooluse.sh` filters commands prior to execution, blocking destructive calls like `rm -rf /` and writing audit logs. Specialized tools like Glob or Grep take precedence over raw shell commands whenever file searching is involved.

Unquoted paths containing spaces break execution, so surrounding path arguments with quotes is mandatory.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill claude-code-bash-patterns -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill claude-code-bash-patterns -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill claude-code-bash-patterns -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install secondsky/claude-skills claude-code-bash-patterns
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill claude-code-bash-patterns -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills --path plugins/claude-code-bash-patterns/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill claude-code-bash-patterns -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/claude-code-bash-patterns/skills/claude-code-bash-patterns/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- intercept shell executions before they run using PreToolUse hooks
- block unsafe shell actions such as `rm -rf` and force-pushes
- chain build, test, and commit steps sequentially without broken pipelines
- define custom slash actions inside `.claude/commands/`

## Example prompts
- Set up a `.claude-hook-pretooluse.sh` script to block dangerous rm commands and log calls
- Create a custom `/deploy` command that runs tests, builds the bundle, and calls Wrangler
- Run tests and push our branch using a sequential `&&` chain

# Claude Code Bash Patterns

**Status**: Production Ready ✅ | **Last Verified**: 2025-11-18

---

## Quick Start

### Basic Command

```bash
ls -la
```

### Command Chaining

```bash
bun install && bun run build && bun test
```

### Hooks

Create `.claude-hook-pretooluse.sh`:

```bash
#!/usr/bin/env bash
# PreToolUse hook - runs before every Bash command
echo "Running: $1"
```

**Load `references/hooks-examples.md` for complete hook patterns.**

---

## The Five Core Patterns

### 1. Sequential Operations (&&)

**Use when**: Each command depends on previous success

```bash
git add . && git commit -m "message" && git push
```

**Why**: Stops chain if any command fails

---

### 2. Parallel Operations (Multiple tool calls)

**Use when**: Commands are independent

```
Message with multiple Bash tool calls in parallel
```

**Load `references/cli-tool-integration.md` for parallel patterns.**

---

### 3. Session Persistence

**Use when**: Need to maintain state across commands

```bash
# Set environment variable
export API_KEY="sk-..."
# Use in later commands (same session)
curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $API_KEY" api.example.com
```

---

### 4. Background Processes

**Use when**: Long-running tasks

```bash
npm run dev &
# Get PID with $!
```

---

### 5. Hooks for Automation

**Use when**: Need pre/post command logic

**Load `references/hooks-examples.md` for all hook types.**

---

## Critical Rules

### Always Do ✅

1. **Use && for sequential dependencies** (not semicolons)
2. **Quote paths with spaces** (`cd "path with spaces"`)
3. **Check environment before destructive ops** (rm, git push --force)
4. **Use specialized tools first** (Read, Grep, Glob before Bash)
5. **Set timeouts for long operations** (up to 10 minutes)
6. **Validate inputs** before passing to shell commands
7. **Use hooks for repeated patterns** (logging, validation)
8. **Maintain session state** (export variables once)
9. **Handle errors explicitly** (check exit codes)
10. **Document custom commands** in .claude/commands/

### Never Do ❌
