# citation-audit

Checks each reference in a paper against real sources: does the work exist, are authors, year and venue right, does the citation fit the claim.

## What it does

The skill walks every `\cite{...}` in your `*.tex` files and every entry in the `.bib`, then checks them in three layers. Existence first: the paper really sits at the claimed arXiv ID, DOI or venue. Metadata next: author names, year, title and venue match canonical records in DBLP, arXiv, ACL Anthology, OpenReview. Context last: the cited work actually supports the sentence it was attached to.

Obvious fabrications are not the real danger, you spot those by eye. The costly ones are a real paper pulled under a claim it never made, or an arXiv preprint whose official venue already exists while the bibliography still points at the old record. The skill catches those too: swapped years, titles drifting between versions, DOIs that will not resolve, missing co-authors.

Run it before submission, once the draft is written and numerical claims are checked. On a half-finished draft the work is wasted, because most of it is matching each `\cite` against its context. The `— soft-only` flag keeps the audit intact but forbids any `.bib` mutation, turning fixes into rewritten sentences in the `*.tex` files. By default the report renders to HTML. Output lands in `CITATION_AUDIT.md` and `CITATION_AUDIT.json`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill citation-audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/citation-audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/citation-audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill citation-audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/citation-audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill citation-audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/citation-audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep citation-audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/citation-audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill citation-audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --path skills/citation-audit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/citation-audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep --skill citation-audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/wanshuiyin/Auto-claude-code-research-in-sleep/tree/HEAD/skills/citation-audit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch a citation that does not back the claim
- match authors, year and venue against DBLP and arXiv
- find a DOI that fails to resolve
- spot title drift between preprint versions
- check the bibliography before submitting a paper

## Example prompts
- check citations in paper/ — citation audit
- run citation-audit on references.bib and verify context too
- run citation-audit with --uncited and list unused entries

> **Before each reviewer slot**, follow [Selectable Reviewers](../shared-references/reviewer-backends.md):
> resolve invocation → `.aris/reviewer.json` → Claude Code default (Codex MCP)

Verify every `\cite{...}` in a paper against three independent layers:

1. **Existence** — the cited paper actually exists at the claimed arXiv ID / DOI / venue.
