## What it does

This skill creates CircleCI version 2.1 pipeline configurations inside `.circleci/config.yml`. It defines Docker, Linux machine, and macOS executors tailored to project requirements. Guidance covers build steps, container creation through `setup_remote_docker`, and integrations with orbs such as AWS CLI, Kubernetes, and Slack.

Pipeline performance rules are built into the examples. The skill details multi-key caching using `package-lock.json` checksums, workspace sharing between jobs, and parallel test execution with `circleci tests split`. Workflows can be structured with branch filters, cron schedules, or manual hold steps requiring approval.

A repository-linked CircleCI account and an active project in the CircleCI dashboard are necessary before any pipeline can execute.

## Requirements
- Works with: Docker

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill circleci -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/circleci/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/circleci/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill circleci -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/circleci/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill circleci -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/circleci/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills circleci
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/circleci/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill circleci -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --path devops/ci-cd/circleci
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/circleci/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills --skill circleci -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/BagelHole/DevOps-Security-Agent-Skills/tree/HEAD/devops/ci-cd/circleci/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- create a `.circleci/config.yml` pipeline from scratch
- configure dependency caching with checksum fallbacks
- split test suites across parallel runners by timing
- insert manual approval gates into deployment workflows
- integrate orbs for AWS, Docker, or Kubernetes

## Example prompts
- Write a .circleci/config.yml for a Node.js app with npm caching and build workspaces
- Configure a CircleCI workflow with 4 parallel test runners using timing data
- Add a manual approval step before deploying to production in CircleCI

# CircleCI

Build, test, and deploy applications using CircleCI's cloud-native CI/CD platform.

## When to Use This Skill

Use this skill when:
- Setting up CI/CD pipelines with CircleCI
- Using orbs for reusable configuration
- Optimizing build times with caching and parallelism
- Configuring CircleCI workflows and approvals
- Managing CircleCI contexts and secrets

## Prerequisites

- CircleCI account connected to repository
- Project enabled in CircleCI dashboard
- Basic YAML understanding

## Configuration File

Create `.circleci/config.yml`:

```yaml
version: 2.1
orbs:
  node: circleci/node@5.2
  docker: circleci/docker@2.4
executors:
  default:
    docker:
      - image: cimg/node:20.10
    working_directory: ~/project
jobs:
  build:
    executor: default
    steps:
      - checkout
      - node/install-packages:
          pkg-manager: npm
      - run:
          name: Build application
          command: npm run build
      - persist_to_workspace:
          root: .
          paths:
            - dist
  test:
    executor: default
    steps:
      - checkout
      - node/install-packages:
          pkg-manager: npm
      - run:
          name: Run tests
          command: npm test
  deploy:
    executor: default
    steps:
      - checkout
      - attach_workspace:
          at: .
      - run:
          name: Deploy
          command: ./deploy.sh
workflows:
  build-test-deploy:
    jobs:
      - build
      - test:
          requires:
            - build
      - deploy:
          requires:
            - test
          filters:
            branches:
              only: main
```

## Executors

### Docker Executor

```yaml
executors:
  node:
    docker:
      - image: cimg/node:20.10
      - image: cimg/postgres:15.0
        environment:
          POSTGRES_USER: test
          POSTGRES_DB: testdb
    working_directory: ~/app
```

### Machine Executor

```yaml
executors:
  linux-machine:
    machine:
      image: ubuntu-2204:current
    resource_class: large
```

### macOS Executor

```yaml
executors:
  macos:
    macos:
      xcode: "15.0.0"
    resource_class: macos.m1.medium.gen1
## Caching
### Dependency Caching
```yaml
jobs:
  build:
    steps:
      - checkout
      - restore_cache:
          keys:
            - v1-deps-{{ checksum "package-lock.json" }}
            - v1-deps-
      - run: npm ci
      - save_cache:
          key: v1-deps-{{ checksum "package-lock.json" }}
          paths:
            - node_modules
```
