## What it does

The skill pinpoints MSBuild project evaluations that share the same `bin` or `obj` paths. Collisions happen during multi-targeting when the target framework is left out of the output path, or when different solutions build the same project simultaneously. As a result, parallel runs fail with file locking errors or quietly overwrite build artifacts.

Investigation relies on an MSBuild `.binlog` file. Its primary flow uses structured MCP server tools to inspect evaluations, check properties like `PublishReadyToRun`, and spot double writes. If MCP is unavailable, it falls back to replaying diagnostic logs with `grep`. Project instances marked with `BuildProjectReferences=false` get ignored because they only resolve reference metadata without touching disk outputs.

The skill will not help with non-MSBuild builds, single-project single-TFM setups, or OS-level file locking.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill check-bin-obj-clash -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/check-bin-obj-clash/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/check-bin-obj-clash/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill check-bin-obj-clash -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/check-bin-obj-clash/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill check-bin-obj-clash -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/check-bin-obj-clash/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dotnet/skills check-bin-obj-clash
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/check-bin-obj-clash/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill check-bin-obj-clash -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dotnet/skills --path plugins/dotnet-msbuild/skills/check-bin-obj-clash
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/check-bin-obj-clash/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dotnet/skills --skill check-bin-obj-clash -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- detect overlapping `OutputPath` and `IntermediateOutputPath` across MSBuild projects
- resolve 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists' during NuGet restore
- diagnose intermittent parallel build failures caused by file access conflicts
- identify missing target framework segments in multi-targeting output paths

## Example prompts
- Inspect build.binlog for bin and obj clashes using check-bin-obj-clash
- Fix the build error 'The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process'
- Find out why project.assets.json gets overwritten during parallel restore

# Detecting OutputPath and IntermediateOutputPath Clashes

## Overview

This skill helps identify when multiple MSBuild project evaluations share the same `OutputPath` or `IntermediateOutputPath`. This is a common source of build failures including:

- File access conflicts during parallel builds
- Missing or overwritten output files
- Intermittent build failures
- "File in use" errors
- **NuGet restore errors like `Cannot create a file when that file already exists`** - this strongly indicates multiple projects share the same `IntermediateOutputPath` where `project.assets.json` is written

Clashes can occur between:
- **Different projects** sharing the same output directory
- **Multi-targeting builds** (e.g., `TargetFrameworks=net8.0;net9.0`) where the path doesn't include the target framework
- **Multiple solution builds** where the same project is built from different solutions in a single build

**Note:** Project instances with `BuildProjectReferences=false` should be **ignored** when analyzing clashes - these are P2P reference resolution builds that only query metadata (via `GetTargetPath`) and do not actually write to output directories.

## When to Use This Skill

**Invoke this skill immediately when you see:**
- `Cannot create a file when that file already exists` during NuGet restore
- `The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process`
- Intermittent build failures that succeed on retry
- Missing output files or unexpected overwriting

## Step 1: Generate a Binary Log

Use the `binlog-generation` skill to generate a binary log with the correct naming convention.

## Primary workflow — binlog MCP

The MCP server exposes structured tools for inspecting a `.binlog` without
parsing text logs. Call them directly instead of replaying the binlog to a text
