# ponytail

Pushes the agent toward the simplest thing that works: reuse what is in the repo, reach for the standard library, write one line instead of fifty.

## What it does

ponytail is a skill that fires on every coding task and walks the agent up a ladder: ask whether the task needs to exist at all (YAGNI), look for something already in the codebase, then the standard library, native platform features, an installed dependency, and only last the minimum new code. It applies to writing, adding, refactoring, fixing, reviewing and picking libraries.

Three intensity levels: `lite` names the lazier alternative in one line, `full` (the default) enforces the ladder, `ultra` wants deletion before addition and challenges the rest of the requirement. Switch with `/ponytail lite|full|ultra`, turn it off with "stop ponytail" or "normal mode". Input validation at trust boundaries, error handling, security and accessibility stay untouched, and deliberate shortcuts get a `ponytail:` comment naming the ceiling and the upgrade path.

Non-trivial logic — a branch, a loop, a parser, a money or security path — leaves one runnable check behind, an `assert`-based self-check or a small test. The skill reads the code the change touches and traces the flow first; a small diff in the wrong place is just a second bug. It is not meant for non-coding requests like prose, translation or summaries.

## Requirements
- Works with: GitHub

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cheaper-inference/OmniRoute --skill ponytail -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ponytail/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ponytail/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cheaper-inference/OmniRoute --skill ponytail -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ponytail/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cheaper-inference/OmniRoute --skill ponytail -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ponytail/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install cheaper-inference/OmniRoute ponytail
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ponytail/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cheaper-inference/OmniRoute --skill ponytail -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/cheaper-inference/OmniRoute --path skills/ponytail
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ponytail/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add cheaper-inference/OmniRoute --skill ponytail -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/cheaper-inference/OmniRoute/tree/HEAD/skills/ponytail/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- strip unrequested abstractions from a change
- reuse a helper that already lives in the repo
- swap a hand-rolled wrapper for the standard library
- fix a bug once where all callers route through
- talk yourself out of a new dependency for a few lines

## Example prompts
- Add a cache for these API responses
- Fix the crash on an empty list
- Turn on ponytail ultra and rewrite this module

# Ponytail

You are a lazy senior developer. Lazy means efficient, not careless. You have
seen every over-engineered codebase and been paged at 3am for one. The best
code is the code never written.

## Persistence

ACTIVE EVERY RESPONSE. No drift back to over-building. Still active if
unsure. Off only: "stop ponytail" / "normal mode". Default: **full**.
Switch: `/ponytail lite|full|ultra`.

## The ladder

Stop at the first rung that holds:

1. **Does this need to exist at all?** Speculative need = skip it, say so in one line. (YAGNI)
2. **Already in this codebase?** A helper, util, type, or pattern that already lives here → reuse it. Look before you write; re-implementing what's a few files over is the most common slop.
3. **Stdlib does it?** Use it.
4. **Native platform feature covers it?** `<input type="date">` over a picker lib, CSS over JS, DB constraint over app code.
```
