## What it does

Four modes cover most PDF work. Factual questions about contract value, parties or key dates. Summaries from three bullets up to an executive summary. Extraction of names, titles, financial figures and action items. Analysis of risks, ambiguous terms and obligations.

Answers come back structured: the answer itself, a source such as page and section, a quote from the document, and a confidence level. Tables get their own format with item, value and location columns. You can also point the skill at several PDFs at once and get a comparison table of differences and similarities.

It runs through the `office-mcp` MCP server and its `extract_text_from_pdf` and `get_pdf_metadata` tools, so that server has to be running first. Scanned files go through OCR, and quality tracks scan quality; handwriting is a weak spot. Password-protected PDFs need the password, and anything past 500 pages may need chunking. Charts are described in words rather than read as numbers.

Narrow questions pay off. Asking what section 5.2 says about liability beats asking for a general rundown, and on long documents section-by-section beats one broad summary request.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill chat-with-pdf -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/chat-with-pdf/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/chat-with-pdf/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill chat-with-pdf -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/chat-with-pdf/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill chat-with-pdf -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/chat-with-pdf/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install claude-office-skills/skills chat-with-pdf
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/chat-with-pdf/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill chat-with-pdf -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills --path chat-with-pdf
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/chat-with-pdf/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add claude-office-skills/skills --skill chat-with-pdf -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/claude-office-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/chat-with-pdf/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull the value and term out of a contract without reading all of it
- turn a financial report into a table of metrics
- compare termination terms across two contracts side by side
- locate the limitations section in a research paper
- produce a three-bullet executive summary for a manager

## Example prompts
- What type of contract is this and who are the parties?
- Extract all amounts and dates into a table with page numbers
- Compare the termination conditions in Contract A and Contract B
