# chaos-engineer

Plans chaos experiments, sets up failure injection and runs game day exercises. Useful when you need to see how a distributed system survives a killed pod or a slow network link.

## What it does

The skill walks a fixed path: map the architecture and dependencies, write a hypothesis and a steady state, cap the blast radius, run the experiment with monitoring and a fast abort, then record what you learned and track one improvement. Reference files cover experiment design, infrastructure failures, Kubernetes, tooling and game days, and the skill pulls the right one for the context at hand.

Deliverables include an experiment document with metrics, injection manifests and scripts, alert configuration, a rollback procedure and a post-mortem template. The examples cover a Litmus ChaosEngine that deletes pods, toxiproxy latency against a downstream database, and a Chaos Monkey config scoped to one ASG.

Safety rules are strict. Baseline first, failure second. Smallest scope at the start. Scripted rollback within 30 seconds. One variable at a time. On customer-facing systems the skill blocks the experiment unless circuit breakers, feature flags or canary isolation are in place. On Linux, toxiproxy comes from the binary release rather than `brew`.

## Requirements
- Works with: Kubernetes

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jeffallan/claude-skills --skill chaos-engineer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/chaos-engineer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/chaos-engineer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jeffallan/claude-skills --skill chaos-engineer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/chaos-engineer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jeffallan/claude-skills --skill chaos-engineer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/chaos-engineer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Jeffallan/claude-skills chaos-engineer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/chaos-engineer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jeffallan/claude-skills --skill chaos-engineer -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Jeffallan/claude-skills --path skills/chaos-engineer
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/chaos-engineer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Jeffallan/claude-skills --skill chaos-engineer -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- design a chaos experiment with a hypothesis and metrics
- cap the blast radius of a fault injection
- write a Litmus ChaosEngine manifest for pod deletion
- add latency to traffic hitting a downstream dependency with toxiproxy
- prepare a rollback procedure and a post-mortem template

## Example prompts
- Design a chaos experiment for `my-service` in the `production` namespace: hypothesis, steady state, blast radius and rollback
- Write a Litmus manifest that deletes pods but touches no more than 33% of replicas
- Lay out a game day plan for the team: scenarios, monitoring and a debrief

# Chaos Engineer

## When to Use This Skill

- Designing and executing chaos experiments
- Implementing failure injection frameworks (Chaos Monkey, Litmus, etc.)
- Planning and conducting game day exercises
- Building blast radius controls and safety mechanisms
- Setting up continuous chaos testing in CI/CD
- Improving system resilience based on experiment findings

## Core Workflow

1. **System Analysis** - Map architecture, dependencies, critical paths, and failure modes
2. **Experiment Design** - Define hypothesis, steady state, blast radius, and safety controls
