# changelog-writer

Turns git commits, PR titles and issue references into a CHANGELOG and release notes. Useful right before a release, when changes need sorting and a version number.

## What it does

The skill walks the git history since the last release and sorts commits into categories: `feat` lands in Added, `fix` in Fixed, `docs` in Documentation, `perf` in Performance, and anything marked `BREAKING CHANGE` gets its own block. Output follows the Keep a Changelog format, and the skill suggests the next semantic versioning bump — major, minor or patch.

A separate user-facing summary covers highlights, new features, fixes, changes, security and contributors. Breaking changes are detected from commit markers, a "breaking-change" PR label, config format changes and API endpoint edits. History is gathered with plain git commands, such as `git log $(git describe --tags --abbrev=0)..HEAD --oneline`.

Conventional commits give the cleanest result. Without a type prefix, a commit gets sorted more or less by guesswork, so on free-form messages you will want to review the categories yourself.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill changelog-writer -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/changelog-writer/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/changelog-writer/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill changelog-writer -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/changelog-writer/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill changelog-writer -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/changelog-writer/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install patricio0312rev/skills changelog-writer
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/changelog-writer/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

gemini skills install https://github.com/patricio0312rev/skills --path foundation/changelog-writer
```
### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)
**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/changelog-writer/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works
### OpenCode
**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add patricio0312rev/skills --skill changelog-writer -a opencode
```
### Claude.ai
## When to use it
- build a CHANGELOG from commits since the last tag
- sort changes into Added, Fixed and Breaking Changes
- pick the next version bump under semantic versioning
- write release notes aimed at users, not developers
- spot breaking changes before a major release
## Example prompts
- create a changelog from commits since the last release
- write release notes for version 2.1.0
- prepare the release: group changes by type and suggest a version number
# Changelog & Release Notes Writer
Generate professional changelogs and release notes from version control history.
## Core Workflow
1. **Analyze commits**: Parse git history since last release
4. **Extract highlights**: Surface most important changes
5. **Format document**: Follow Keep a Changelog format
6. **Suggest version**: Recommend semantic version bump
7. **Generate release notes**: Create user-friendly summary
