## What it does

The skill hands the agent a `CHANGELOG.md` template and the rules for sorting entries into Added, Changed, Deprecated, Removed, Fixed and Security. There is an `[Unreleased]` block and a filled-in version example, so the agent has something concrete to follow when you ask it to document a release.

Breaking changes get their own treatment: the agent flags them, links a migration guide and lists steps such as updating environment variables or running a migration script. Security entries land in a separate section with severity and affected versions. If your project already uses a different changelog layout, you will be editing the template by hand, because this one sticks to Keep a Changelog.

Worth installing when releases come often and the notes live in your head or in commit messages. The skill does not read your git history on its own, so you tell the agent what actually shipped in a version.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill changelog-maintenance -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/changelog-maintenance/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill changelog-maintenance -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill changelog-maintenance -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts changelog-maintenance
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill changelog-maintenance -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --path skills/changelog-maintenance
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts --skill changelog-maintenance -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aj-geddes/useful-ai-prompts/tree/HEAD/skills/changelog-maintenance/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull release notes into a single `CHANGELOG.md`
- flag breaking changes and write the migration steps
- document fixed vulnerabilities with affected versions
- list deprecated features and their removal timeline
- keep the `[Unreleased]` section current between releases

## Example prompts
- Update CHANGELOG.md with a 2.1.0 section covering new features and fixes
- Add the breaking API response format change to the changelog and write migration steps
- Add a Security entry for the patched vulnerability with affected versions
