## What it does

This skill hands the agent a Celery reference for Python. It covers brokers, task definitions, routing, periodic jobs, workflows, error handling, monitoring and integration with Django, Flask and FastAPI. Sections load through progressive disclosure, so the agent pulls only what the question needs.

Broker setup is spelled out for Redis, RabbitMQ and Amazon SQS, each with its own connection URL and transport options, including Sentinel and multi-host RabbitMQ. Results land in a backend: Redis, a database or S3.

Workers start with a separate command that names the app, log level and queues. Tasks fire through `delay` or `apply_async`, and `result.status` reports state. Celery is the wrong pick for plain async I/O or sub-second request/response work — `asyncio` covers that, while Celery drags a broker and a result backend behind it.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill celery -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/celery/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/celery/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill celery -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/celery/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill celery -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/celery/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills celery
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/celery/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill celery -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/python/async/celery
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/celery/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill celery -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- move email sending and report generation out of the request cycle
- run recurring jobs without hand-rolled cron
- spread CPU-heavy work across several workers
- chain tasks with dependencies between them
- retry a failed task automatically

## Example prompts
- show me how to start a Celery worker for my Django project
- add a nightly cleanup task with Celery beat
- how do I chain two tasks and wait for the result

# Celery: Distributed Task Queue

## Summary
Celery is a distributed task queue system for Python that enables asynchronous execution of background jobs across multiple workers. It supports scheduling, retries, task workflows, and integrates seamlessly with Django, Flask, and FastAPI.

## When to Use
- **Background Processing**: Offload long-running operations (email, file processing, reports)
- **Scheduled Tasks**: Cron-like periodic jobs (cleanup, backups, data sync)
- **Distributed Computing**: Process tasks across multiple workers/servers
- **Async Workflows**: Chain, group, and orchestrate complex task dependencies
- **Real-time Processing**: Handle webhooks, notifications, data pipelines
- **Load Balancing**: Distribute CPU-intensive work across workers

**Don't Use When**:
- Simple async I/O (use `asyncio` instead)
- Real-time request/response (use async web frameworks)
- Sub-second latency required (use in-memory queues)
- Minimal infrastructure (use simpler alternatives like RQ or Huey)

## Quick Start

### Installation
```bash
# Basic installation
pip install celery
# With Redis broker
pip install celery[redis]
# With RabbitMQ broker
pip install celery[amqp]
# Full batteries (recommended)
pip install celery[redis,msgpack,auth,cassandra,elasticsearch,s3,sqs]
```

### Basic Setup
```python
# celery_app.py
from celery import Celery
# Create Celery app with Redis broker
app = Celery(
    'myapp',
    broker='redis://localhost:6379/0',
    backend='redis://localhost:6379/1'
)
# Configuration
app.conf.update(
    task_serializer='json',
    accept_content=['json'],
    result_serializer='json',
    timezone='UTC',
    enable_utc=True,
)
# Define a task
@app.task
def add(x, y):
    return x + y
@app.task
def send_email(to, subject, body):
    # Simulate email sending
    import time
    time.sleep(2)
    print(f"Email sent to {to}: {subject}")
    return {"status": "sent", "to": to}
```

### Running Workers
```bash
# Start worker
celery -A celery_app worker --loglevel=info
# Multiple workers with concurrency
celery -A celery_app worker --concurrency=4 --loglevel=info
# Named worker for specific queues
celery -A celery_app worker -Q emails,reports --loglevel=info
```

### Executing Tasks
```python
# Call task asynchronously
