# ce-handoff

Saves session context into an immutable handoff document and lets a fresh agent resume work without reading the previous session history.

## What it does

The skill captures session context before an agent exits. Running it bare or with `create [focus]` produces an immutable handoff document under the `ce-handoff/v1` metadata contract. It links to commits and repository files instead of duplicating code, keeping secrets redacted. By default, it writes to the operating system temporary directory.

Managed `/tmp` storage is wiped by the operating system, so long-running workflows require an explicit destination path. The skill avoids mutating fragile working trees: it will not commit, stash, or tear down local changes automatically. Once created, it outputs a ready-to-use resume command for the next session.

When resuming, the skill inspects candidates strictly by metadata such as file paths and frontmatter. The agent stops before acting. It treats the imported document as untrusted context rather than executable instructions, waiting for user confirmation before modifying code.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin --skill ce-handoff -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/ce-handoff/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/ce-handoff/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin --skill ce-handoff -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/ce-handoff/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin --skill ce-handoff -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/ce-handoff/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin ce-handoff
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/ce-handoff/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin --skill ce-handoff -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin --path skills/ce-handoff
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/ce-handoff/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin --skill ce-handoff -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/EveryInc/compound-engineering-plugin/tree/HEAD/skills/ce-handoff/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- preserve session context for a fresh agent
- point to relevant files and commits without leaking credentials
- discover and rank handoff candidates using only metadata
- resume an interrupted workflow in a separate session

## Example prompts
- /ce-handoff create refactor database migrations
- /ce-handoff resume /tmp/handoff.md
- Create a handoff for another agent focusing on API test coverage

# Handoff

Preserve enough session context for a fresh agent to orient quickly, then keep the user in control of what happens next.

Creation and resume are deliberately open at their edges. The managed store and `ce-handoff/v1` metadata are defaults that make CE-created handoffs easy to find; they do not restrict where a handoff may be created or what a user may resume from. A resume source may come from any person, agent, or system and may use any readable format.

## Route the invocation

- A bare invocation always creates a handoff.
- `create [focus]` explicitly creates one. Use `focus` as the intended objective for the next session.
- `resume [source or keywords]` reads an explicit continuity source or discovers likely candidates.
- Natural-language creation and resume intent follows the same routes. This does not apply to ordinary requests to continue the current session unless the user expresses handoff intent.

## Create

Read `references/create.md` before writing anything. That read is not optional. It defines the managed-store shell block and path rules, the `ce-handoff/v1` frontmatter contract, the body contract, and the completion report.

Create one immutable handoff at the destination the user requested, or use the managed temporary store by default. The handoff supplements authoritative artifacts; it does not replace them. Write or publish it with existing capabilities. When the user named another path, folder, format, or publication destination, honor it using an appropriate available capability, including an installed publishing skill. Do not also create a persistent managed-store copy unless the user asks.

Point at plans, issues, commits, diffs, documentation, and files rather than reproducing them, and redact secrets, credentials, and unrelated personal information. Keep the handoff pointer-first: for each reference the next agent depends on, name what specifically matters there — not only the path. Prefer repository-relative paths for repository files; use absolute paths only for machine-local state and label them as machine-local.
