# cco

Shows what a session costs and where the tokens go, then hands you commands to spend less. Handy when the bill climbs and you cannot tell why.

## What it does

The skill breaks a session down by money and tokens. Run it with no arguments and you get a board: budget, spend, savings, waste, the active task and next actions. From there, `audit` works over your real transcripts, `report` covers token ROI across tracked sessions, `roi` breaks monthly savings down by model, `tools` prices each tool in tokens, and `overhead` shows the fixed context every session starts with.

Cutting spend happens through separate commands. `pack <task>` gathers the files a task needs, line ranges included, before anything gets read. `anatomy` draws a compact map of the project. `claudemd` hunts for bloat in `CLAUDE.md`, and `shield` turns never-used files into `.contextignore` rules. `task` tracks what a task costs and keeps its state across `/compact`, while `orchestrate <task>` hands the reading and test runs to Haiku subagents.

Everything runs as local Node scripts from `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/src/`. That is why the skill needs Claude or Cowork on your machine: without `node` or `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}`, as in claude.ai chat, no script will start, and the skill will point you to `fresh-start` or `token-check` instead. Thresholds live in `config`, the context budget and auto-compact settings in `budget`, and `doctor` checks the whole install.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer --skill cco -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cco/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cco/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer --skill cco -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cco/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer --skill cco -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cco/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer cco
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cco/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer --skill cco -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer --path skills/cco
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cco/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer --skill cco -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/egorfedorov/claude-context-optimizer/tree/HEAD/skills/cco/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- see where a session's tokens went
- gather a task's files before the agent starts reading
- keep task state alive across `/compact`
- spot bloat in `CLAUDE.md`
- compare monthly savings by model

## Example prompts
- Show the board: what this session costs and where the tokens go
- Pack the files for the `API refactor` task with line ranges
- Start tracking a task so its cost and state survive `/compact`

# Context Optimizer

> **Needs Claude Code** (or Cowork on your computer): this runs the plugin's local scripts. If `node` or `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}` isn't available, as in claude.ai chat, don't try to run anything. Say so in one line and offer the `fresh-start` or `token-check` skill instead.

Arguments: `$ARGUMENTS`. The first word is the command; the rest are its
`<args>`. No command means `board`. `help`, or a command not in the table,
means: print the table below as a short menu and stop.

For a command, read its instructions in
`${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/skills/cco/commands/<command>.md` and follow them.
Those files write the plugin's path as `${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}`: use
`${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}` in its place, and the user's `<args>` where they say
`<args>`. When the user typed only a command that just runs its script, run
the script from the table directly and skip reading the file.
