## What it does

The skill loads as a set of instructions and fires when you ask how to get more out of Claude, how to write better prompts, or why the agent keeps making the same mistake. It lays out six steps: give the agent a way to verify its own work, follow explore → plan → implement, write scoped prompts that name files, keep `CLAUDE.md` short, manage context with `/clear` and `/compact <hint>`, and hand investigation and review to subagents.

Everything follows from one constraint: the context window fills up fast and output quality drops as it does. So after two failed corrections on the same issue, the skill says to stop correcting and start over — clear the session, find what the original prompt was missing, and write it again. Verification means a runnable signal: a test suite, a build exit code, a linter, a diff script. Not the agent saying it looks done.

Plan mode is not for everything. A typo or a one-line rename does not need it, and the overhead just slows you down. Reach for it when the change spans several files or the code is new to you. Install with `npx skills add` and the flag for your platform.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dboeckli/ai-agent-skills --skill cc-best-practices -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cc-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cc-best-practices/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dboeckli/ai-agent-skills --skill cc-best-practices -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cc-best-practices/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dboeckli/ai-agent-skills --skill cc-best-practices -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cc-best-practices/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install dboeckli/ai-agent-skills cc-best-practices
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cc-best-practices/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dboeckli/ai-agent-skills --skill cc-best-practices -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/dboeckli/ai-agent-skills --path .claude/skills/cc-best-practices
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cc-best-practices/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add dboeckli/ai-agent-skills --skill cc-best-practices -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/dboeckli/ai-agent-skills/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/cc-best-practices/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- stop the agent from quitting as soon as the code looks finished
- break a multi-file refactor into a plan before touching code
- turn a vague prompt into one with named files and described symptoms
- recover a session where the agent repeats the same mistake
- decide when to clear context and when to compact it with a hint

## Example prompts
- Why does Claude keep repeating the same mistake after three corrections?
- How should I approach a refactor across 10 files?
- How do I write prompts for Claude so the results aren't flaky?

# Claude Code Best Practices

Based on the official Anthropic documentation at https://code.claude.com/docs/en/best-practices.

The single most important constraint: **Claude's context window fills up fast,
and performance degrades as it fills.** Every best practice flows from this.

---

## Instructions

### Step 1: Always give Claude a way to verify its work

Provide a runnable check (test suite, build exit code, linter, diff script) so Claude can confirm success independently. Ask for **evidence** (test output, command result), not just assertions.

### Step 2: Use the Explore → Plan → Implement workflow for non-trivial tasks

Enter `/plan` mode, let Claude read the codebase first, then draft a plan before writing any code. Exit plan mode to implement. Skip this only for small, obvious changes.

### Step 3: Write specific, scoped prompts

Name files (`@filename`), describe symptoms rather than guesses, reference existing patterns. Vague prompts produce vague results.

### Step 4: Keep CLAUDE.md short and actionable

Include only what Claude cannot infer from the code. Every line should answer: "Would removing this cause Claude to make mistakes?" If not — cut it.

### Step 5: Manage context aggressively

Use `/clear` between unrelated tasks. After two failed corrections on the same issue: clear and write a better prompt. Use `/compact <hint>` to compact with focus.

### Step 6: Use subagents for investigation and review

Let subagents explore unfamiliar code or review your implementation — they run in a fresh context without bias toward the code they just wrote.

---

## Examples

### Example 1: Implementing a feature correctly

User says: "I keep getting flaky results when I ask Claude to implement something"

Actions:

1. Add a verification step to the prompt: "write a validateEmail function — run the existing test suite after implementing, show me the output"
```
