# cargo-workflows

A skill that walks your agent through Cargo workspaces, feature flags, build.rs, build caching and dependency auditing. Useful once a Rust project spans several crates.

## What it does

The skill covers seven areas of Cargo work: workspace setup, feature flags, `build.rs` scripts, incremental builds and CI caching, `cargo nextest`, dependency auditing, and everyday commands. Your agent gets ready-made `Cargo.toml` templates, a table of `println!` directives for build scripts, plus `nextest.toml` and `deny.toml` configs.

What sits inside is reference material, not runnable scripts. A workspace is assembled from a root manifest with `members` and `resolver = "2"`, shared versions live under `[workspace.dependencies]`, and members pull them in with `serde.workspace = true`. There is a separate section on features: they are additive, so a feature enabled anywhere in the dependency graph stays on, and the `dep:tokio` syntax keeps implicit features from appearing.

For auditing, the skill installs `cargo-audit`, `cargo-deny` and `cargo-machete`, each via `cargo install`. So you need a working Rust toolchain and access to crates.io. CI caching comes in two flavours: `Swatinem/rust-cache@v2` or a manual `actions/cache@v3` keyed on the `Cargo.lock` hash. For release builds the advice is to leave `incremental = false` alone, since incremental compilation often hurts there.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cargo-workflows -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cargo-workflows/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cargo-workflows/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cargo-workflows -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cargo-workflows/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cargo-workflows -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cargo-workflows/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills cargo-workflows
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cargo-workflows/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cargo-workflows -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/rust/cargo-workflows
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cargo-workflows/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill cargo-workflows -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/rust/cargo-workflows/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- split a project into several crates under one workspace
- trace why a feature got enabled by another dependency
- write a build.rs that reruns when a file changes
- cut Rust build time in CI with a proper cache
- check dependencies for advisories and unwanted licenses

## Example prompts
- Set up a Cargo workspace with core, cli and server crates and shared dependency versions
- Why did the tokio feature turn on when I never asked for it? Walk me through the feature resolver
- Add a Cargo cache to CI and run the tests through cargo nextest

# Cargo Workflows

## Purpose

Guide agents through Cargo workspaces, feature management, build scripts (`build.rs`), CI integration, incremental compilation, and the Cargo tool ecosystem.

## Triggers

- "How do I set up a Cargo workspace with multiple crates?"
- "How do features work in Cargo?"
- "How do I write a build.rs script?"
- "How do I speed up Cargo builds in CI?"
- "How do I audit my Rust dependencies?"
- "What is cargo nextest and should I use it?"

## Workflow

### 1. Workspace setup

# Shared dependency versions (workspace.dependencies)
[workspace.dependencies]
serde = { version = "1", features = ["derive"] }
tokio = { version = "1", features = ["full"] }
anyhow = "1"

# Shared profile settings
[profile.release]
lto = "thin"

```
```toml
# Member Cargo.toml
[package]
name = "myapp-core"
version.workspace = true
edition.workspace = true

[dependencies]
serde.workspace = true    # Inherit from workspace
anyhow.workspace = true
```
### 2. Feature flags
```toml
[features]
default = ["std"]

# Simple flag
std = []

# Feature that enables another feature
