# cargo-mcp

Teaches your agent to interact with Cargo via its hosted MCP server without installing the CLI. Ideal for discovering actions, checking credit costs, and running batches in conversation.

## What it does

The skill instructs the agent on handling Cargo hosted MCP runtime. It covers finding actions through `search_actions`, pricing them in credits upfront, and executing single records or batches. It also details reading data via `list_models` and running selective queries with `query_models` up to a 50-row ceiling.

Opening every session with `whoami` is mandatory. An API token locks the runtime to one workspace with no parameter to override it, so missing this check risks executing mutations against the wrong company data. Input payloads must go into `data` or `records` directly, leaving out node configuration objects.

The division of responsibility is sharp. The hosted MCP interface acts purely as a runtime for one-shot conversation tasks. Any stateful workflow authoring, project deployment, mailbox warmup, or raw SQL warehousing belongs in the CLI.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getcargohq/cargo-skills --skill cargo-mcp -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cargo-mcp/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cargo-mcp/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getcargohq/cargo-skills --skill cargo-mcp -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cargo-mcp/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getcargohq/cargo-skills --skill cargo-mcp -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cargo-mcp/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install getcargohq/cargo-skills cargo-mcp
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cargo-mcp/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getcargohq/cargo-skills --skill cargo-mcp -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/getcargohq/cargo-skills --path cargo-mcp
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cargo-mcp/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add getcargohq/cargo-skills --skill cargo-mcp -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/getcargohq/cargo-skills/tree/HEAD/cargo-mcp/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- price actions in credits before execution using search_actions
- run single-record or batch enrichment tasks through MCP
- verify active workspace binding with whoami before mutations
- query workspace models within the 50-row limit

## Example prompts
- Call whoami to confirm which Cargo workspace this token belongs to
- Find person enrichment actions and report their credit cost
- Execute execute_action_batch for these records and poll until finished

# Cargo — the hosted MCP server

Cargo has two surfaces. The rest of this bundle documents the CLI. This one
documents `https://mcp.getcargo.io/mcp`, and, more usefully, **when to reach for
which.**

> **Three different things here are called MCP.** This skill is the **hosted
> server Cargo runs**, which you point a client at. Publishing a curated server
> *out of* your own workspace (`ai mcp-server create`, then `cargo-ai mcp` over
> stdio) and attaching somebody else's server *to* a Cargo agent
> (`release update-draft --mcp-clients`) are both
> [`cargo-ai`](../cargo-ai/SKILL.md). Check which one the user means before
> answering: the words are identical and the answers share nothing.

## Which surface

| The job | Surface |
| --- | --- |
| Run one action, or one action over many records | either; MCP if it is already connected |
| Find what Cargo can do, and what it costs | either (`search_actions` is the MCP half) |
| Read records off a model | either |
| One SELECT over models (aggregates, joins), 50 rows max | either (`query_models` is the MCP half) |
| Full SQL result sets, exports | **CLI** ([`cargo-storage`](../cargo-storage/SKILL.md)) |
| Build or edit a multi-step workflow, tool, or play | **CLI** ([`cargo-orchestration`](../cargo-orchestration/SKILL.md)) |
| GTM as Code: project plan and deploy | **CLI** ([`cargo-project`](../cargo-project/SKILL.md)) |
```
