# carbon-report

Prints the CO2 footprint of your Claude sessions — today, this year, all time — with a car equivalent and a 2-tonne annual budget.

## What it does

The skill runs a bash script that reads the local `carbon.db` and totals emissions across three windows: today, the current calendar year, and all time. Session counts and USD cost come along with it. Whatever the script prints, the skill hands back unchanged.

Equivalence factors live in `data/factors.json`, and the set is chosen from your locale before the script forces `LC_ALL=C`. A French car and a US car differ by roughly 1.7x, so the pick matters. Sessions on non-Anthropic models are flagged as excluded and stay out of every total. The year figure is measured against a 2-tonne-per-person budget — a scale for comparison, not an allowance for AI use.

\`jq` and `data/factors.json` are required; without either the script exits with an error. The database comes from `scripts/setup.sh`, and there is nothing to report until it exists. On Windows, Git Bash paths in the `C:\Users\...` form get converted with `cygpath`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gwittebolle/claude-carbon --skill carbon-report -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/carbon-report/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/carbon-report/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gwittebolle/claude-carbon --skill carbon-report -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/carbon-report/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gwittebolle/claude-carbon --skill carbon-report -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/carbon-report/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install gwittebolle/claude-carbon carbon-report
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/carbon-report/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gwittebolle/claude-carbon --skill carbon-report -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/gwittebolle/claude-carbon --path skills/carbon-report
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/carbon-report/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add gwittebolle/claude-carbon --skill carbon-report -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- see the lifetime CO2 total for your sessions
- check this year's total against a 2-tonne budget
- read API cost next to emissions
- keep local-model sessions out of the aggregates
- count how many sessions ran today

## Example prompts
- Show my CO2 emissions report
- Run carbon-report and print the output as is
- How much CO2 did my sessions use this year?
