# capture-screen

A skill for programmatic screenshot capture on macOS: it finds window IDs, changes the view through AppleScript and grabs the frame with screencapture.

## What it does

The skill breaks the job into three steps. First the agent finds the window ID with Swift and CoreGraphics (`CGWindowListCopyWindowInfo`), then it changes the view if needed — zoom, scroll, selection — through AppleScript, and finally captures the frame with `screencapture -l` plus that window number. Excel gets the fullest treatment: zoom level, scroll to a row or column, sheet and cell range selection.

A bundled script `scripts/get_window_id.swift` takes a keyword and prints lines like `WID=12345 | App=... | Title=...`. Run it with no argument and it lists every window. Other apps get basic control only: activate, or raise a window through System Events.

\`osascript` hangs when the target app is not running or not responding, so the author advises wrapping calls in `timeout 5`. Add `sleep 1` after AppleScript commands, otherwise the capture catches a half-rendered UI. On Retina Macs `screencapture` outputs 2x by default; `sips --resampleWidth` brings it back to 1x. This runs on macOS only.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill capture-screen -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/capture-screen/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/capture-screen/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill capture-screen -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/capture-screen/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill capture-screen -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/capture-screen/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daymade/claude-code-skills capture-screen
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/capture-screen/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill capture-screen -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daymade/claude-code-skills --path daymade-macos/capture-screen
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/capture-screen/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daymade/claude-code-skills --skill capture-screen -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- capture one window by ID without activating it
- scroll an Excel workbook to a given row before the shot
- collect a series of frames from several sheets in one file
- raise an app window to the front before capturing
- downscale a Retina screenshot to 1x

## Example prompts
- find the Excel window and screenshot the DCF sheet
- scroll the active Excel window to row 45 and capture it
- take a series of screenshots across all sheets in the workbook

# Capture Screen

Programmatic screenshot capture on macOS: find windows, control views, capture images.

## Select observation or foreground control

For an existing view, enumerate and capture the exact window without activating it.
Skip Step 2 when no view change is needed. A window image proves visible content in
that capture, not keyboard focus, input delivery or a successful business action.

Before opening/raising windows, scrolling, selecting, changing zoom or sending keys,
the executing agent checks user activity and other agents' ownership. Use a concrete
task handoff or an existing explicit idle-desktop authorization; under the latter,
coordinate exclusive access and proceed without asking again. Idle input alone is
not ownership. Busy/unknown occupancy or unexpected input stops foreground actions;
continue independent reads and do not restore old focus after human takeover.

Inspect the chosen tool's activation semantics. An app-targeted call or a shell job
running in the background does not prove it preserves focus. A failed capture does
not authorize raising the window, permission changes or switching tools around a
host refusal/GUI lock. Only request a handoff when existing authorization is absent.

## Quick Start

### Observe an unidentified dialog or the full desktop

Use this route when the user requests a whole-screen view, or when permitted
window observation cannot identify the reported obstruction. First establish
that the host permits this capture and its scope. An app-specific control
refusal does not prove screen capture is unavailable; it also does not authorize
using a different tool to read content the host protects. Stop if the refusal
covers the proposed capture or a GUI lock prevents it.

Capture without activation, scrolling or input:

```bash
capture_dir="$(mktemp -d)"
screencapture -x "$capture_dir/desktop.png"
```

Inspect the resulting image with the host's permitted image viewer. On a
multi-display desktop, inspect each produced display image before claiming to
have checked the whole desktop. File creation alone does not prove the requested
dialog was captured. Once identified, prefer the exact window for further
observations and keep the user's reported interaction failure in scope.
