## What it does

The skill walks through installing `@capgo/capacitor-updater`, wiring `plugins.CapacitorUpdater` in `capacitor.config.*`, and calling `notifyAppReady()` from the entry point. Reference files cover configuration, the JS API, channels and rollouts, CI/CD, and troubleshooting. Each one loads only when its topic comes up.

Version matching is the first thing to get right. The updater major follows the Capacitor major: 8.x projects take `@capgo/capacitor-updater@latest`, 7.x projects take the `lts-v7` tag. The `@capgo/capacitor-updater@9.0.0` package on npm is an old Capacitor 5 release marked deprecated, so it is the wrong pick for a Capacitor 9 project. Check `npm view @capgo/capacitor-updater dist-tags` before advising on one.

\`notifyAppReady()` belongs at the very top of the entry file, ahead of any network call. Miss the `appReadyTimeout` window (10000 ms by default) and the bundle is marked failed and the previous one comes back. The skill tells you not to paste Capgo API keys or signing passwords into chat; sign in with `npx @capgo/cli@latest login` or set `CAPGO_TOKEN` instead. Commands that change remote state wait for your go-ahead.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill capgo-live-updates -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/capgo-live-updates/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/capgo-live-updates/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill capgo-live-updates -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/capgo-live-updates/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill capgo-live-updates -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/capgo-live-updates/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Cap-go/capgo-skills capgo-live-updates
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/capgo-live-updates/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill capgo-live-updates -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Cap-go/capgo-skills --path skills/capgo-live-updates
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/capgo-live-updates/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill capgo-live-updates -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Cap-go/capgo-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/capgo-live-updates/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- ship a web-layer hotfix without store review
- pick an autoUpdate mode and set it in capacitor.config
- add notifyAppReady so the bundle does not roll back
- decode an error code like no_new_version_available or on_premise_app
- wire a manual download/next/set flow and switch channels

## Example prompts
- Set up Capgo live updates in my Capacitor project
- Why does the update never apply and the device roll back?
- Configure a manual download and next flow for the updater

description: Sets up and debugs Capgo live (OTA) updates in a Capacitor app with @capgo/capacitor-updater. Use when the user wants to ship web-layer fixes without app store review, install or configure the updater plugin, choose an autoUpdate mode, call notifyAppReady, wire manual download/next/set flows, set channels from the app, or debug updates that never apply, roll back, or report codes such as no_new_version_available, disable_auto_update_to_major, cannot_update_via_private_channel, or on_premise_app. Do not use for CLI-only bundle/channel operations (capgo-release-management), Capgo Cloud native builds (capgo-native-builds), or migrations from another OTA vendor.

# Capgo Live Updates

Wire `@capgo/capacitor-updater` into a Capacitor app, ship the first bundle, and keep rollback safe.

Facts below were checked against `@capgo/capacitor-updater` 8.52 and `@capgo/cli` 8.77 (October 2026).

## When to Use

TRIGGER when:

- The user wants OTA / live updates, hotfixes without store review, or "Capgo" in a Capacitor app.
- The updater plugin needs installing, upgrading, or configuring in `capacitor.config.*`.
- The user asks about `notifyAppReady`, `autoUpdate` modes, `directUpdate`, `autoSplashscreen`, `setChannel`, `getLatest`, `download`, `next`, `set`, or `reset`.
- Updates upload fine but devices never get them, roll back, or loop.

Do not use when:

- The work is only CLI bundle, channel, rollout, or encryption-key commands. Use `capgo-release-management`.
- The user needs a signed IPA/APK/AAB from Capgo Cloud. Use `capgo-native-builds`.
- The user is moving from Capawesome Cloud (`capawesome-live-update-migration`) or Ionic Appflow (`ionic-appflow-migration`).
- The user wants the whole release pipeline (OTA, native builds, and store publishing). Use `capgo-release-workflows`.
- The request is about general CLI routing or MCP setup. Use `capgo-cli-usage`.
