## What it does

The skill sets up push notifications in a Capacitor app through Firebase Cloud Messaging and the `@capacitor-firebase/messaging` plugin. The agent inspects the project first: whether `android/` and `ios/` exist, which bundler is in use, which `@capacitor/core` version sits in `package.json`. It asks only about what it cannot read from files.

Then it works step by step: Firebase project setup, plugin install, separate instructions for Android, iOS and Web, APNs key handling, permission requests, FCM token retrieval, incoming notification handling and tap handling. Optional pieces cover topic subscriptions, Android notification channels and a token refresh listener. It finishes with `npx cap sync` and a test send from the Firebase console.

One hard rule: `@capacitor/push-notifications` must not be in the project, because it conflicts with `@capacitor-firebase/messaging`. If it shows up in your dependencies, remove it first. iOS work needs Xcode on macOS and a paid Apple Developer Program membership; Android needs Android Studio. The skill does not cover local notifications or push providers other than Firebase.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-push-notifications -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-push-notifications -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-push-notifications -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install capawesome-team/skills capacitor-push-notifications
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-push-notifications -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/capawesome-team/skills --path skills/capacitor-push-notifications
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-push-notifications -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/capawesome-team/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/capacitor-push-notifications/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up push notifications in a Capacitor app through Firebase
- wire up an APNs key and iOS capabilities
- retrieve an FCM token and listen for its refresh
- create Android notification channels
- send a test notification from the Firebase console

## Example prompts
- Set up push notifications in my Capacitor app with Firebase Cloud Messaging
- Install @capacitor-firebase/messaging and configure Android and iOS step by step
- Add FCM topic subscriptions and Android notification channels

# Capacitor Push Notifications

Set up and use push notifications in Capacitor apps using Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) via the `@capacitor-firebase/messaging` plugin.

## Prerequisites

1. **Capacitor 6, 7, or 8** app.
2. Node.js and npm installed.
3. A **Firebase project**. Create one at [Firebase console](https://console.firebase.google.com/) if needed.
4. For **iOS**: A paid [Apple Developer Program](https://developer.apple.com/programs/) membership and Xcode installed.
5. For **Android**: Android Studio installed.
6. `@capacitor/push-notifications` must **not** be installed — it conflicts with `@capacitor-firebase/messaging`.

## Agent Behavior

- **Guide step-by-step.** Walk the user through the process one step at a time. Never present multiple unrelated questions at once.
- **Auto-detect before asking.** Check the project for platforms (`android/`, `ios/`), build tools, framework, and `package.json` dependencies. Only ask the user when something cannot be detected.
- **One decision at a time.** When a step requires user input, ask that single question, wait for the answer, then continue.
- **Present clear options.** Provide concrete choices (e.g., "Do you want to configure topic subscriptions? (yes/no)") instead of open-ended questions.
