## What it does

The skill splits plugin work into phases and keeps the agent from juggling unrelated tasks at once. It reads `package.json` and the directory layout first to figure out where the project stands, then asks what you need: a plugin from scratch, a method on an existing one, a single platform, configuration, hooks, or a release. If the plugin is already scaffolded, that step gets skipped.

From there it designs the TypeScript interface in `src/definitions.ts` and registers the plugin with `registerPlugin()` in `src/index.ts`. The web layer lives in `src/web.ts` and extends `WebPlugin`; methods with no browser equivalent get `this.unimplemented()`. Native code means an implementation class plus a plugin class in Swift for iOS, and the same shape in Java or Kotlin for Android, checked with `npm run verify:ios` and `npm run verify:android`.

Check your setup before you start. You need Node.js 18+, npm 6+ and Capacitor 6+; iOS work wants Xcode 15+ on macOS, Android work wants Android Studio Hedgehog 2023.1.1+. The skill is not meant for installing existing plugins into an app, upgrading them to newer Capacitor versions, adding SPM support, or non-Capacitor plugin frameworks — worth knowing if that is the job in front of you.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-plugin-development -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-plugin-development -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-plugin-development -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install capawesome-team/skills capacitor-plugin-development
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-plugin-development -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/capawesome-team/skills --path skills/capacitor-plugin-development
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add capawesome-team/skills --skill capacitor-plugin-development -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/capawesome-team/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/capacitor-plugin-development/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new Capacitor plugin from scratch
- add a method to an existing plugin
- write the iOS bridge in Swift
- stub out web methods that have no browser API
- generate docs and publish the plugin to npm

## Example prompts
- Scaffold a new Capacitor plugin for camera access
- Add a getLastPhoto method to the existing plugin
- Implement the Android side of the plugin in Kotlin

# Capacitor Plugin Development

Create and maintain Capacitor plugins — scaffolding, native API bridging (iOS/Android), type definitions, testing, and publishing.

## Prerequisites

| Requirement | Version |
| --- | --- |
| Node.js | LTS (18+) |
| npm | 6+ |
| Xcode | 15+ (for iOS) |
| Android Studio | Hedgehog 2023.1.1+ (for Android) |
| Capacitor | 6+ |

## Agent Behavior

- **Auto-detect before asking.** Read `package.json`, inspect the directory structure, and infer the plugin's current state before prompting the user.
- **Guide step-by-step.** Walk the user through one phase at a time. Do not present multiple unrelated tasks simultaneously.
- **Skip what exists.** If the plugin is already scaffolded, skip scaffolding. If the iOS implementation already exists, skip to the next platform.
- **Ask which platforms to target.** If the user does not specify, implement all three (iOS, Android, Web).

## Procedures

### Step 1: Determine the Task

Ask the user what they want to do. Common tasks:

1. **Create a new plugin from scratch** — proceed to Step 2.
2. **Add a new method to an existing plugin** — skip to Step 5.
3. **Add a new platform implementation** — skip to the relevant platform step (Step 6, 7, or 8).
4. **Set up plugin configuration** — read `references/plugin-configuration.md` and apply.
