## What it does

The skill establishes authoring practices for `SKILL.md`, supporting scripts, and folder layouts. It focuses on routing logic: crafting specific triggers and negative triggers so the agent calls the correct skill without stealing requests from sibling skills. It does not handle general application documentation, user README files, or marketing copy.

The workflow targets a lean core document under roughly 250 lines, moving deep documentation into `references/` with a defined when-to-load index. Validation relies on `bun run lint-skills` to enforce mirror parity and metadata rules, while `skillgrade` handles non-regression tests. Single-line frontmatter descriptions fail linting if they exceed 1024 characters.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill skill-creator -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/skill-creator/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill skill-creator -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill skill-creator -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Cap-go/capgo-skills skill-creator
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill skill-creator -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Cap-go/capgo-skills --path skills/skill-creator
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Cap-go/capgo-skills --skill skill-creator -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Cap-go/capgo-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/skill-creator/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- write precise positive and negative triggers in skill frontmatter
- split an oversized `SKILL.md` into structured `references/` files
- resolve check failures reported by `bun run lint-skills`
- set up `skillgrade` evals to catch agent behavioral regressions

## Example prompts
- "Draft a new agent skill for PostgreSQL migrations with proper negative triggers"
- "Trim this SKILL.md under 250 lines and move reference tables to separate files"
- "Fix the metadata and description errors flagged by bun run lint-skills"

````text
name: skill-creator
description: Guides authoring, reviewing, and validating agent skills (SKILL.md + metadata.json + references/ + scripts/) in this Capgo skills repository and similar ones. Covers trigger and negative-trigger design, lean SKILL.md with a when-to-load reference index, traps over basics, verification and error-handling sections, version tagging of facts, subagent-oriented skills (main-agent vs subagent split), optional when_to_use frontmatter, inline snapshots with allowed-tools, skillgrade evals, and this repo's canonical skills/ to plugins/ mirroring and registration. Use when creating a new skill, tightening a skill's description or triggers, splitting a long skill into references, or fixing `bun run lint-skills` failures. Do not use for app documentation, README or marketing copy, or library code that is not a skill.
# Skill Authoring
Write skills that load at the right moment, teach what the model does not already know, and prove their own results.
## When to Use
TRIGGER when:
- The user creates a skill directory, or asks to improve, review, or split an existing skill.
- A skill triggers too often, too rarely, or collides with a sibling skill.
- `bun run lint-skills` fails, or a skill must be registered in a plugin or the marketplace.
- The user wants a skillgrade eval for a skill.
Do not use when:
- The user is writing app docs, a README, a changelog, or marketing copy.
- The user is editing library or plugin source that is not a skill.
## Reference Index
Only load a reference when its topic is in play.
| File | Load when |
| --- | --- |
| `references/repo-layout.md` | Adding, renaming, or registering a skill in this repository, mirroring into `plugins/`, or reading lint errors |
| `references/authoring-patterns.md` | Writing the body: trigger design, reference index, traps, verification, version tags, subagent skills, inline snapshots |
## Procedure
### 1. Scope the skill
- Write one sentence: "Load this when <concrete situation>, so the agent can <outcome>."
- List the sibling skills that could also match. Each one becomes a negative trigger.
- Split the skill if it covers two unrelated workflows. Merge it if it would be a one-paragraph stub.
- Ask the user at real judgement calls (scope, audience, which product to prefer). Do not ask about things you can read from the repo.
### 2. Write the frontmatter
```yaml
---
name: my-skill # lowercase, hyphenated, equals the folder name
description: <what it does>. Use when <symptoms, APIs, file names, error strings>. Do not use for <case> (sibling-skill).
---
```
- The description is the only text the router sees. Put concrete triggers in it: command names, config keys, file names, exact error strings. Name the sibling skills in the negative clause.
- Keep it to one line and at most 1024 characters (lint enforces both).
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE 58097034f46b766a

The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 58097034f46b766a tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
