# canvas-generative

A skill for algorithmic graphics on Canvas 2D: particles, flow fields, noise, fractals and L-systems. Useful when you need a browser animation or a generative still.

## What it does

The skill hands your agent a set of rules for Canvas 2D work: sizing the buffer for Retina, recalculating on resize, running the loop on `requestAnimationFrame` with a capped delta. Then come the recipes — a fixed-size particle pool so the garbage collector stays quiet, an angle grid for flow fields, fractal noise built from octaves, L-systems with string rewriting and turtle graphics.

There is a section on what not to do. `clearRect` on every frame wipes the trail, so a semi-transparent fill takes its place. `getImageData` inside the animation loop reads back from the GPU and drags the frame rate down; the author says to leave it alone unless you truly need it. An offscreen canvas for double buffering removes flicker.

The skill flags itself as version-sensitive: API names and browser-support claims were checked against primary sources, and the date sits in `_jutsu/VERSIONS.md`. If that date has gone stale, re-verify before you lean on a version number.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill canvas-generative -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/canvas-generative/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/canvas-generative/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill canvas-generative -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/canvas-generative/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill canvas-generative -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/canvas-generative/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install AThevon/genjutsu canvas-generative
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/canvas-generative/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill canvas-generative -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu --path skills/_jutsu/canvas-generative
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/canvas-generative/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add AThevon/genjutsu --skill canvas-generative -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/AThevon/genjutsu/tree/HEAD/skills/_jutsu/canvas-generative/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- size a canvas for Retina so it renders sharp
- run a particle system without frame drops
- build a flow field from noise and steer particles through it
- generate a fractal or plant with an L-system
- leave a fading trail behind moving shapes without flicker

## Example prompts
- build a generative canvas animation: a noise flow field with particles following it
- set up the canvas for devicePixelRatio and redraw on resize
- draw a fractal tree with an L-system, its rules and turn angle

## Canvas 2D Setup

### DPR-Aware Sizing

Every canvas must be sharp on Retina/HiDPI displays. Set the buffer size to the physical pixel size, scale down with CSS.

```js
function setupCanvas(canvas, width, height) {
  const dpr = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;
  canvas.width = width * dpr;
  canvas.height = height * dpr;
  canvas.style.width = `${width}px`;
  canvas.style.height = `${height}px`;
  const ctx = canvas.getContext('2d');
  ctx.scale(dpr, dpr);
  return ctx;
}
```

### Resize Handler

```js
function handleResize(canvas, ctx, draw) {
  const ro = new ResizeObserver(([entry]) => {
    const { width, height } = entry.contentRect;
    const dpr = window.devicePixelRatio || 1;
    canvas.width = width * dpr;
    canvas.height = height * dpr;
    ctx.scale(dpr, dpr);
    draw(); // re-render after resize
  });
  ro.observe(canvas.parentElement);
  return () => ro.disconnect();
}
```

### Animation Loop (RAF)

```js
let animId;
let prevTime = 0;
function loop(time) {
  const dt = Math.min((time - prevTime) / 1000, 0.1); // cap delta to avoid spiral of death
  prevTime = time;
  update(dt);
  render(ctx);
  animId = requestAnimationFrame(loop);
}
// Start
animId = requestAnimationFrame(loop);
// Stop
cancelAnimationFrame(animId);
```

---

## Noise

| Type | Characteristics | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Perlin | Smooth, grid-aligned bias, cheaper | Terrain, clouds, gentle organic textures |
| Simplex | No grid artifacts, better gradients, slightly costlier | Flow fields, organic motion, seamless tiling |
| Worley (Cellular) | Distance-to-nearest-point, cell-like | Voronoi patterns, caustics, cracks, cell textures |

**Usage rules:**
- Always scale input coordinates (divide by a `noiseScale` factor) -- raw pixel coords produce visual noise
- Use octaves (fractal Brownian motion) for detail: sum multiple noise calls at increasing frequency and decreasing amplitude
- Seed your noise for reproducibility

```js
// fBm pattern
function fbm(x, y, octaves = 4, lacunarity = 2, gain = 0.5) {
  let value = 0, amplitude = 1, frequency = 1, maxAmp = 0;
  for (let i = 0; i < octaves; i++) {
````
