## What it does

The skill routes the agent through CAD work: creating and editing parts, organizing a project, exporting meshes, resolving prompt references like `/work/robot/STEP/assembly.step#o1.2.f7`, and checking geometry. A model is a plain Python script with a parameterless decorated function that returns a build123d shape. Example: `src/bracket.py` with `@step(out="../STEP/bracket.step")`, run as `python src/bracket.py`.

Inside is a task table pointing at references: the model contract, shape construction, assembly positioning, project layout, mesh exports, inspection and validation, the repair loop, and version migrations. Mesh output comes from stacking `@stl`, `@threemf` or `@glb` on the model, or from a one-off `cadgen stl build STEP/bracket.step STL/bracket.stl`. 2D DXF drawings belong to `$dxf`, and URDF, SRDF or SDF go to the robot-description skill.

cadgen runs through `uv`: `cadgen` means `uvx --no-config --managed-python --python 3.13 --from cadgen==0.7.26 cadgen`, and `python` is the same line ending in `python`. The first run downloads that installation plus a headless browser for snapshots. `cadgen doctor <skill-dir>` confirms the pinned install is the one in use and that the CAD kernel loads. Decorator `out=` paths are relative to the model script, not the working directory, so a model that does not anchor its inputs on `__file__` breaks when run from elsewhere.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add earthtojake/text-to-cad --skill cad -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cad/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cad/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add earthtojake/text-to-cad --skill cad -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cad/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add earthtojake/text-to-cad --skill cad -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cad/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install earthtojake/text-to-cad cad
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cad/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add earthtojake/text-to-cad --skill cad -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/earthtojake/text-to-cad --path skills/cad
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cad/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add earthtojake/text-to-cad --skill cad -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/earthtojake/text-to-cad/tree/HEAD/skills/cad/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- model a parametric part from a Python script
- export STEP to STL, 3MF or GLB
- lay out a multi-model CAD project
- measure geometry and validate an assembly
- open someone else's STEP or STL and review it

## Example prompts
- Create a `bracket` part 40 mm wide and export it to `STEP/bracket.step`
- Assemble the parts under `src/` and place them with `.moved()`
- Check the geometry in `STEP/assembly.step` and tell me where it intersects
