# cad-to-data

Pulls element properties, quantities and relationships out of Revit, IFC, DWG and DGN files into Python structures. Handy when you need quantities or a bill of materials from a model.

## What it does

The skill covers extraction from CAD and BIM files: elements, their properties, quantities and relationships. Categories are spelled out — walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, doors, windows, columns, beams, stairs, ramps, furniture, equipment, pipes, ducts, cable trays, spaces. Formats are listed too: IFC, RVT, DWG, DXF, DGN, NWD, STEP.

Inside is Python code: dataclasses for a 3D point, a bounding box, material info and a CAD element, plus an `IFCExtractor` class with an `extract()` method that takes a file path and an optional category filter. The result carries elements, levels, per-category counts and extraction time. For IFC the comments point at `ifcopenshell`, and the sample elements are generated by a stub, so expect to finish that code before it reads a real file.

It requires `python3` — the skill declares it as a required binary. Runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. Behind a proxy or a private mirror, set that in your environment or the tool's config file, not on the install line.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill cad-to-data -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/cad-to-data/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/cad-to-data/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill cad-to-data -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/cad-to-data/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill cad-to-data -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/cad-to-data/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction cad-to-data
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/cad-to-data/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill cad-to-data -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --path 2_DDC_Book/2.4-PDF-CAD-to-Data/cad-to-data
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/cad-to-data/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction --skill cad-to-data -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/datadrivenconstruction/DDC_Skills_for_AI_Agents_in_Construction/tree/HEAD/2_DDC_Book/2.4-PDF-CAD-to-Data/cad-to-data/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull element properties and quantities out of an IFC model
- count walls, doors and windows per level
- build a material table with areas and volumes
- filter elements by category before export
- get bounding boxes for downstream calculations

## Example prompts
- extract data from `model.ifc` and show the per-category counts
- export only walls and floors from the IFC with their volumes
- list the levels and which elements sit on each one

# CAD To Data

## Overview

Based on DDC methodology (Chapter 2.4), this skill converts CAD and BIM files to structured data, extracting element properties, quantities, and relationships from Revit, IFC, DWG, and DGN files.
