# c-obsidian

Uses an Obsidian vault for daily notes, session logs, knowledge capture, and search. Useful when an agent needs memory that persists between sessions.

## What it does

The skill operates an Obsidian vault through `obsidian-cli`. It can search notes, create or append content, open entries, list folders, and show tags. It searches before creating a note, which helps avoid duplicate entries. Paths are resolved from the vault root.

At session start, it looks for a note dated today inside `Daily Notes`. When none is found, it creates one with sections for tasks, notes, and the session log. At the end, it appends a timestamped summary. The Obsidian app itself does not need to be open.

When `c-memory` is installed alongside `c-obsidian`, the skill keeps both stores aligned. Files from `~/.claude/memory/` are written into the Obsidian `AI/` folder, while newer Obsidian content is checked when a session begins. The split is deliberate: `MEMORY.md` holds quick facts, and Obsidian keeps richer context.

## Requirements
- Works with: Obsidian

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daxaur/openpaw --skill c-obsidian -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/c-obsidian/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/c-obsidian/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daxaur/openpaw --skill c-obsidian -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/c-obsidian/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daxaur/openpaw --skill c-obsidian -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/c-obsidian/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install daxaur/openpaw c-obsidian
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/c-obsidian/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daxaur/openpaw --skill c-obsidian -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/daxaur/openpaw --path skills/c-obsidian
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/c-obsidian/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add daxaur/openpaw --skill c-obsidian -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/daxaur/openpaw/tree/HEAD/skills/c-obsidian/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- searching a vault before adding notes
- creating and maintaining daily session notes
- appending updates to existing Obsidian entries
- syncing agent memory with the `AI/` folder
- listing vault folders and tags

## Example prompts
- Check today’s note in `Daily Notes` and create it if it is missing.
- Save this fact to the agent memory and Obsidian, then update `AI/Memory`.
- Search the `Work` folder for notes tagged `project` and append a short session summary to the relevant note.

# Obsidian — Knowledge Base & Memory

Manage your Obsidian vault as a persistent memory layer. Use it for daily notes, session logs, knowledge capture, and searching your second brain.

## CLI Commands

```bash
# Search before creating (avoid duplicates)
obsidian-cli search "query"
obsidian-cli search --tag "project" --folder "Work"
# Create and edit
obsidian-cli create "Title" --content "Body"
obsidian-cli create "Title" --template "Daily Note"
obsidian-cli append "Note Title" "Additional content"
# Open, list, vault
obsidian-cli open "Note Title"
obsidian-cli list --folder "Projects"
obsidian-cli tags
obsidian-cli vault --list
```

## Daily Notes Integration

When the user starts a session, check for today's daily note:

```bash
obsidian-cli search --folder "Daily Notes" "$(date +%Y-%m-%d)"
```

If none exists, create one:

```bash
obsidian-cli create "$(date +%Y-%m-%d)" --folder "Daily Notes" --content "# $(date +%Y-%m-%d)\n\n## Tasks\n\n## Notes\n\n## Session Log\n"
```

Append a session log entry at the end of each session:

```bash
obsidian-cli append "$(date +%Y-%m-%d)" "### Session $(date +%H:%M)\n- [summary of what was done]\n"
```

## Memory Sync (Auto)

If both c-memory and c-obsidian are installed (check `ls ~/.claude/skills/c-memory/`), keep them in sync automatically:

### Bidirectional Sync
- `~/.claude/memory/` → Obsidian `AI/` folder (on every memory write)
- Obsidian `AI/` → `~/.claude/memory/` (on session start, if Obsidian has newer content)

### Sync Commands
```bash
# Push memory to Obsidian
obsidian-cli create "AI/Memory" --content "$(cat ~/.claude/memory/MEMORY.md)"
obsidian-cli create "AI/People" --content "$(cat ~/.claude/memory/people.md)"
# Pull from Obsidian to check for updates
obsidian-cli search --folder "AI" "Memory"
# Append session log to daily note
obsidian-cli append "$(date +%Y-%m-%d)" "### Claude Session $(date +%H:%M)\n- [summary]"
```

### Rules
- When the user says "remember this", save to both systems
- Obsidian is the long-term archive; `~/.claude/memory/` is the quick-access cache
- MEMORY.md is authoritative for quick facts; Obsidian is richer context

## Guidelines

- Always search before creating to avoid duplicate notes
- Use frontmatter tags: `tags: [project, active]`
- File paths are relative to vault root
- Obsidian app does not need to be running
- Keep daily notes in a consistent folder (default: `Daily Notes/`)
