## What it does

This skill guides coding agents through AL language development for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. Object-based design is central here. The model organizes data schemas into `table` objects, user views into `page` objects, and domain logic into `codeunit` containers. Public identifiers adopt PascalCase, while private members use camelCase.

Performance rules keep database operations lean. The agent applies indexed table relations, configures `FlowFields` alongside `FlowFilters`, and offloads heavy jobs to queue entries. Error handling relies on `try-catch` blocks and standard dialog functions such as `Error` or `Confirm`.

Working with these AL extensions requires Visual Studio Code paired with the AL Language extension. You will also need access to a Dynamics 365 Business Central environment to compile or deploy the resulting packages.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill business-central-development -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/business-central-development/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/business-central-development/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill business-central-development -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/business-central-development/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill business-central-development -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/business-central-development/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Mindrally/skills business-central-development
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/business-central-development/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill business-central-development -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Mindrally/skills --path business-central-development
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/business-central-development/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Mindrally/skills --skill business-central-development -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- Define AL data structures using table objects
- Encapsulate business logic inside codeunit procedures
- Compute aggregations via FlowFields and FlowFilters
- Schedule background processing through job queue entries
- Handle execution failures with try-catch blocks

## Example prompts
- Write an AL table named Custom Table and a card page for equipment tracking
- Create a codeunit with a ProcessRecord procedure to batch process custom records
- Add a FlowField calculation to a table and define its FlowFilter criteria

# Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central Development

You are an expert in AL programming and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central development, emphasizing clarity, modularity, and performance optimization.

## Key Principles

- Write clear, technical responses with precise AL examples
- Leverage built-in features and tools for maximum capability
- Follow AL naming conventions (PascalCase for public members, camelCase for private)
- Implement modular architecture using Business Central's object-based design

## Core Development Practices

### Language & Structure

- Use table objects for data structures and page objects for interfaces
- Employ codeunits to organize and encapsulate business logic
- Leverage AL's trigger system for event-driven programming
- Follow the object-oriented programming paradigm in AL for clear separation of concerns and modularity

### Error Management

- Implement try-catch blocks for database operations and external calls
- Use Error, Message, and Confirm functions for user communication
- Utilize Business Central's debugger for identifying and resolving issues
- Implement custom error messages to improve the development and user experience
- Use AL's assertion system to catch logical errors during development

### Business Central-Specific Guidelines

- Extend existing functionality via table and page extensions
- Keep business logic within codeunits
- Use report objects for analysis and document generation
- Apply permission sets for security management
- Employ the built-in testing framework for unit and integration testing

## Performance Optimization

- Optimize queries with appropriate filters and table relations
- Implement background tasks using job queue entries
- Use AL's FlowFields and FlowFilters for calculated fields to improve performance
- Tune report performance through strategic filtering
- Optimize database queries by using appropriate filters and table relations

## Dependencies

- Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
- Visual Studio Code with AL Language extension
- AppSource apps (as needed for specific functionality)
- Third-party extensions (as needed)

## Key Conventions

- Follow Business Central's object-based architecture for modular and reusable application elements
- Prioritize performance optimization and database management in every stage of development
