# bun-macros

A skill that covers running JavaScript during bundling and inlining the result. Useful when a version string, git hash or file belongs in the build, not the runtime.

## What it does

Bun macros run once at bundle time and their output lands in the final file as a plain value. The skill walks through the syntax: an import with the `with { type: "macro" }` attribute and a call that gets replaced by a constant.

Covered cases include inlining environment variables, reading the git commit and branch through `Bun.spawnSync`, embedding files and JSON, generating build constants and a route list from a directory, plus codegen from a schema. Async macros, parameters, return types and error handling get their own sections — `requireEnv` is there to fail the build when a variable is missing.

The catch: macros only run under `bun build`. With `bun run` they never execute, so runtime-dependent logic does not belong in one. Return values must be serializable; a function or class triggers `Not serializable`. Worth checking before you move anything into a macro.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill bun-macros -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bun-macros/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bun-macros/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill bun-macros -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bun-macros/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill bun-macros -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bun-macros/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install secondsky/claude-skills bun-macros
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bun-macros/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill bun-macros -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills --path plugins/bun/skills/bun-macros
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bun-macros/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add secondsky/claude-skills --skill bun-macros -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/secondsky/claude-skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/bun/skills/bun-macros/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- bake a version string and build time into the bundle
- inline the git commit and branch without reading files at runtime
- embed LICENSE or config.json directly into the code
- generate types and an API client from a schema at build time
- fail the build when a required env var is missing

## Example prompts
- Show me how to declare a Bun macro and import it with `with { type: "macro" }`
- Write a macro that returns the git commit via `Bun.spawnSync` and inlines it
- Why does my macro not run under `bun run`?

# Bun Macros

Bun macros run JavaScript at bundle time and inline the results into the output.

## Quick Start

```typescript
// src/config.ts (macro file)
export function getVersion() {
  return "1.0.0";
}
export function getBuildTime() {
  return new Date().toISOString();
}
// src/index.ts (consumer)
import { getVersion, getBuildTime } from "./config" with { type: "macro" };
// At bundle time, these become:
const version = "1.0.0";
const buildTime = "2024-01-15T12:00:00.000Z";
```

## Macro Syntax

```typescript
// Import with macro attribute
import { fn } from "./macro-file" with { type: "macro" };
// Call the macro (evaluated at build time)
const result = fn();
```

## Common Use Cases

### Environment Inlining

```typescript
// macros/env.ts
export function env(key: string): string {
  return process.env[key] ?? "";
}
// src/index.ts
import { env } from "./macros/env" with { type: "macro" };
const apiUrl = env("API_URL");
// Becomes: const apiUrl = "https://api.example.com";
```

### Git Information

```typescript
// macros/git.ts
export function gitCommit(): string {
  return Bun.spawnSync(["git", "rev-parse", "HEAD"])
    .stdout.toString().trim();
}
export function gitBranch(): string {
  return Bun.spawnSync(["git", "branch", "--show-current"])
    .stdout.toString().trim();
}
// src/index.ts
import { gitCommit, gitBranch } from "./macros/git" with { type: "macro" };
const BUILD_INFO = {
  commit: gitCommit(),
  branch: gitBranch(),
};
// Inlined at build time
```

### File Embedding

```typescript
// macros/embed.ts
export function embedFile(path: string): string {
  return Bun.file(path).text();
}
export function embedJSON(path: string): unknown {
  return Bun.file(path).json();
}
// src/index.ts
import { embedFile, embedJSON } from "./macros/embed" with { type: "macro" };
const license = embedFile("./LICENSE");
const config = embedJSON("./config.json");
```

### Build Constants

```typescript
// macros/constants.ts
export function isDev(): boolean {
  return process.env.NODE_ENV !== "production";
}
export function buildDate(): number {
  return Date.now();
}
export function randomId(): string {
  return Math.random().toString(36).slice(2);
}
// src/index.ts
import { isDev, buildDate, randomId } from "./macros/constants" with { type: "macro" };
if (isDev()) {
  console.log("Development mode");
}
const BUILD_ID = randomId();
```

### Directory Listing

```typescript
// macros/files.ts
import { readdirSync } from "fs";
export function listRoutes(): string[] {
