# building-blocks

A skill for implementing AEM Edge Delivery Services blocks and core changes: it creates block folders, writes decorate functions, scopes CSS. Runs from content-driven-development at the implementation step.

## What it does

The skill walks through block implementation in AEM Edge Delivery Services (EDS, Franklin, Helix). It creates and modifies block folders, writes JavaScript decoration, adds CSS, and wires up delayed loading. Core work goes through it too: `scripts.js`, global styles, `delayed.js`, configuration.

The workflow has five steps: find similar blocks, build the structure, decorate, style, test. For a new block the skill suggests starting with a search across `blocks/` and the block-collection-and-party skill to borrow DOM patterns. CSS stays scoped to the block and leans on custom properties such as `--background-color` and `--body-font-family`.

One catch: this skill expects to be invoked from content-driven-development at Step 5, not on its own. If the CDD process is not running, it stops and sends you back. Before that you need test content, its URL, and a running dev server — CDD verifies all of it. Pushing test content to DA takes an Adobe IMS token, which the da-auth skill provides.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add adobe/skills --skill building-blocks -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/building-blocks/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/building-blocks/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add adobe/skills --skill building-blocks -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/building-blocks/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add adobe/skills --skill building-blocks -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/building-blocks/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install adobe/skills building-blocks
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/building-blocks/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add adobe/skills --skill building-blocks -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/adobe/skills --path plugins/aem/edge-delivery-services/skills/building-blocks
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/building-blocks/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add adobe/skills --skill building-blocks -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/adobe/skills/tree/HEAD/plugins/aem/edge-delivery-services/skills/building-blocks/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- scaffold a new block folder and its files in EDS
- write a decorate function that reuses existing DOM
- scope CSS to one block without touching the rest of the page
- edit `scripts.js` or `delayed.js` without breaking core
- wire up delayed loading for a heavy block

## Example prompts
- Implement a new hero block against the test content, following content-driven-development
- Add a dark variant to the cards block: CSS only, no JS changes
- Move a shared helper into `scripts.js` and call it from the new block's decorate

# Building Blocks

This skill guides you through implementing AEM Edge Delivery blocks following established patterns and best practices. Blocks transform authored content into rich, interactive experiences through JavaScript decoration and CSS styling.

**IMPORTANT: This skill should ONLY be invoked from the content-driven-development skill during Step 5 (Implementation).**

If you are not already following the CDD process, STOP and invoke the **content-driven-development** skill first.

## Related Skills

- **content-driven-development**: MUST be invoked before using this skill to ensure content and content models are ready
- **da-auth**: Obtain a valid Adobe IMS token if test content needs to be pushed to DA before implementation can begin
- **block-collection-and-party**: Use to find similar blocks for patterns
- **testing-blocks**: Automatically invoked during Step 5 for comprehensive testing

## When to Use This Skill

This skill is invoked automatically by **content-driven-development** during Step 5 (Implementation). It handles:

**Block Development:**
- Creating new block files and structure
- Implementing JavaScript decoration
- Adding CSS styling

**Core Functionality:**
- Scripts.js modifications (decoration, utilities, auto-blocking)
- Global styles (styles.css, lazy-styles.css)
- Delayed functionality (delayed.js)
- Configuration changes

**Combined:**
- Blocks with supporting core changes (utilities, global styles, etc.)

Prerequisites (verified by CDD):
- ✅ Test content exists (in CMS or local drafts)
- ✅ Content model is defined/documented (if applicable)
- ✅ Test content URL is available
- ✅ Dev server is running

## Block Implementation Workflow

Track your progress:
- [ ] Step 1: Find similar blocks for patterns (if new block or major changes)
- [ ] Step 2: Create or modify block structure (files and directories)
- [ ] Step 3: Implement JavaScript decoration (skip if CSS-only)
- [ ] Step 4: Add CSS styling
- [ ] Step 5: Test implementation (invokes testing-blocks skill)
