## What it does

The skill walks a clinic supervisor through an interview: which practice area, what students should ask a new client, how much of the work the skill does for them, and where they must stop for sign-off. It reads role, practice areas and jurisdiction from `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md`, then writes plain markdown to `guides/<practice-area>.md` next to the plugin config. One guide per practice area is normal. Re-running the command revises an existing guide; small edits are easier by hand.

Each guide carries a single posture: assist, guide or teach. Guide gives students the structure and leaves the substance to them, assist hands over a draft and lets them learn by editing, teach withholds the finished text and works through attempts instead. On top of that the supervisor sets the item list for review gates, local rules, forms and deadlines, and cross-plugin checks that wrap other plugins' skills in a supervision layer.

One thing to know before you start: the skill only runs for a Supervising attorney role in the plugin profile. Anyone else gets stopped and pointed at `/legal-clinic:ramp`, so the legal-clinic config has to exist first.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill build-guide -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/build-guide/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/build-guide/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill build-guide -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/build-guide/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill build-guide -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/build-guide/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install anthropics/claude-for-legal build-guide
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/build-guide/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill build-guide -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal --path legal-clinic/skills/build-guide
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/build-guide/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add anthropics/claude-for-legal --skill build-guide -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-for-legal/tree/HEAD/legal-clinic/skills/build-guide/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set which questions students ask a new client
- choose where the skill does the work and where it only prompts
- mark the points where a student must get sign-off
- write down local rules, forms and deadlines for one practice
- test-run a draft the way a student would see it

## Example prompts
- \`/legal-clinic:build-guide` for immigration: keep the default intake, add a note on filing deadlines
- \`/legal-clinic:build-guide` housing, teach posture, stop before anything goes to the client
- \`/legal-clinic:build-guide` family — rewrite the client-letters section and drop the income questions

  Help a clinic supervisor author a practice-area guide that configures how
  student-facing skills behave — intake questions, pedagogy posture (assist /
  guide / teach), review gates, cross-plugin checks, and local rules. Use when
  a supervising attorney wants to build or revise a per-practice-area guide,
  tune how the clinic skills behave for their clinic type, or set their
  teaching philosophy as plugin configuration.

# /build-guide

1. Load `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/CLAUDE.md` → role (must be Supervising attorney), practice areas, jurisdiction.
2. Use the workflow below.
3. If the user is not the supervising attorney, stop and redirect (students run `/legal-clinic:ramp`).
4. Walk through: practice area → intake questions → pedagogy posture → review gates → cross-plugin checks → local rules.
5. Write `~/.claude/plugins/config/claude-for-legal/legal-clinic/guides/<practice-area>.md`. Create the `guides/` directory if needed.
6. Offer a test run — run `/legal-clinic:draft` under the configured posture so the supervisor sees what a student sees.

```
/legal-clinic:build-guide
```

Multiple guides are fine — one per practice area. Re-run this command to revise. Edit the guide file directly for quick changes.

# Build Guide: Supervisor-Authored Practice-Area Guide

## Purpose

The supervisor guide is the dial that turns student-facing skills from "get the work done" into "teach the student to do the work." Every student-facing skill in this plugin reads the guide before producing output: intake asks the questions the supervisor wants asked, drafting skills pick a pedagogy posture (assist / guide / teach), review gates route to the supervisor on the items the supervisor cares about, and cross-plugin checks wrap other-plugin skills in a supervision layer.

This skill helps a supervisor author that guide in 5-10 minutes per practice area. The guide is plain markdown at a well-known path — edit it by hand anytime.

**Audience: the supervising attorney.** Not students. Students run `/legal-clinic:ramp` and then the student-facing skills; they don't author guides.
