## What it does

The skill starts with diagnosis, not fixes. It has the agent time a full build with `time cmake --build build -j$(nproc)`, pull per-file timings out of `-ftime-report`, and read Ninja's serial timings to see which translation units eat the clock. Only then does it move to tools.

Covered: ccache and sccache setup, precompiled headers via `target_precompile_headers`, unity builds with `UNITY_BUILD`, split-DWARF for faster linking, and distributed compilation with distcc. Include pruning with IWYU gets its own section. There are config examples for ccache and sccache, including a shared cache directory for CI and an S3 backend for sccache.

A few things bite. Unity builds break on anonymous namespaces and duplicate static variables, so problem files get excluded with `SKIP_UNITY_BUILD_INCLUSION`. Precompiled headers pay off on large, stable headers like STL, Boost or Qt — not on project headers you edit all day. distcc needs a daemon running on each worker and a host list in `DISTCC_HOSTS`. Worth checking your setup against those before you turn anything on.

## Requirements
- Works with: Unity

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill build-acceleration -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/build-acceleration/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/build-acceleration/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill build-acceleration -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/build-acceleration/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill build-acceleration -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/build-acceleration/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills build-acceleration
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/build-acceleration/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill build-acceleration -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --path skills/build-systems/build-acceleration
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/build-acceleration/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add mohitmishra786/low-level-dev-skills --skill build-acceleration -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- find which translation unit is slowing the build
- set up ccache and check the hit rate
- run sccache with an S3 backend
- add precompiled headers to a CMake target
- cut link time with split-DWARF

## Example prompts
- My C++ build is too slow, help me find the bottleneck
- Set up ccache for this CMake project
- How do I enable unity builds without breaking ODR?

# Build Acceleration

## Purpose

Guide agents through reducing C/C++ build times using caching (ccache/sccache), distributed compilation (distcc), unity/jumbo builds, precompiled headers, split-DWARF for faster linking, and include pruning with IWYU.

## Triggers

- "My C++ build is too slow — how do I speed it up?"
- "How do I set up ccache / sccache?"
- "How do precompiled headers work with CMake?"
- "How do I set up distributed compilation with distcc?"
- "How do I reduce link times with split-DWARF?"
- "How do I find which headers are slowing down compilation?"

## Workflow

### 1. Diagnose the bottleneck first

```bash
# Time the full build
time cmake --build build -j$(nproc)
# Find the slowest TUs (CMake ≥3.16 with --profiling-output)
cmake -S . -B build -DCMAKE_CXX_FLAGS="-ftime-report"
cmake --build build 2>&1 | grep "Total" | sort -t: -k2 -rn | head -20
# Ninja build timings (use ninja -j1 for serial timing)
ninja -C build -j1 2>&1 | grep "^\[" | sort -t" " -k2 -rn | head -20
```

### 2. ccache — compiler cache

```bash
# Install
apt-get install ccache   # Ubuntu/Debian
brew install ccache      # macOS
# Check hit rate
ccache -s
# Configure cache size (default 5GB)
ccache -M 20G
# Invalidate cache if needed
ccache -C
```

CMake integration (recommended over prefix hacks):

```cmake
# CMakeLists.txt
find_program(CCACHE_PROGRAM ccache)
if(CCACHE_PROGRAM)
    set(CMAKE_C_COMPILER_LAUNCHER   ${CCACHE_PROGRAM})
    set(CMAKE_CXX_COMPILER_LAUNCHER ${CCACHE_PROGRAM})
endif()
```

Key `~/.config/ccache/ccache.conf` options:

```ini
max_size = 20G
compression = true
compression_level = 6
# For CI: share cache across jobs
cache_dir = /shared/ccache
```

### 3. sccache — cloud-compatible cache (Rust, C/C++)

```bash
cargo install sccache
# Or: brew install sccache
# Set as compiler launcher
export RUSTC_WRAPPER=sccache          # for Rust
export CMAKE_C_COMPILER_LAUNCHER=sccache    # for CMake
# With S3 backend
export SCCACHE_BUCKET=my-build-cache
export SCCACHE_REGION=us-east-1
sccache --start-server
````
