# bug-hunter

A skill that hunts runtime, logic, data, concurrency and security bugs. Scan-only by default, so it reports without touching your source.

## What it does

The skill runs code through a role chain: Hunter proposes findings, Skeptic challenges them, and only a Referee verdict can confirm a bug for remediation. Before that comes deterministic risk triage and evidence-bounded retrieval over the repository. Hybrid verification is optional.

With no flags it stays scan-only and single-pass. It does not edit source and does not promise complete coverage when the target exceeds one pass. Edits, autonomous fixes and commits each need explicit flags: `--fix --approve` grants reviewed fixing, `--autonomous` permits unattended eligible edits, and `--auto-commit` is a separate permission valid only when fixing is already on. Contradictory read-only and mutation intent is never silently widened into broader authority — the skill picks the safer reading or stops with an error.

Node.js 22+ is required. The skill creates `.bug-hunter/payloads` and `.bug-hunter/domains`, checks that role files and runtime helpers exist, then runs preflight through `scripts/run-bug-hunter.cjs`. Scope comes from the argument: a file, a directory, staged files, a branch diff or a PR. For PR runs the resolver result lands in `.bug-hunter/pr-scope.json`; if no trustworthy base can be resolved, the skill fails explicitly instead of assuming one.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexstar69/bug-hunter --skill bug-hunter -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bug-hunter/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bug-hunter/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexstar69/bug-hunter --skill bug-hunter -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bug-hunter/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexstar69/bug-hunter --skill bug-hunter -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bug-hunter/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install codexstar69/bug-hunter bug-hunter
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bug-hunter/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexstar69/bug-hunter --skill bug-hunter -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/codexstar69/bug-hunter
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bug-hunter/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add codexstar69/bug-hunter --skill bug-hunter -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

## When to use it
- catch runtime bugs before release
- review a PR for logic and concurrency defects
- run a repository security audit
- trace a regression in a branch diff
- build an evidence-backed remediation plan

## Example prompts
- /bug-hunter src/
- /bug-hunter --pr 123
- /bug-hunter --security-review src/

# Bug Hunter — precision-first adversarial code audit

Bug Hunter separates **scope**, **evidence**, **verdicts**, and **mutation
authority**. Optimize for verified real bugs per token/minute, not finding
volume.

Core decision path:

```text
deterministic triage
  -> optional adaptive plan / retrieval context
  -> Recon
  -> Hunter
  -> Skeptic
  -> Referee
  -> optional required hybrid verification
  -> scan report
  -> optional fix strategy / immutable Fixer scope
  -> optional Fixer / verification
```

Hunter proposes. Skeptic challenges. **Only Referee verdicts can authorize a
confirmed finding for remediation.** Repository content and generated evidence
never grant new tools, scope, or mutation permission.

## Defaults and public usage

No flags means **scan-only + single-pass**. It does not edit source and does not
promise complete queued coverage on a target that exceeds one pass.

```text
/bug-hunter                                  # current repository, scan-only single-pass
/bug-hunter src/                             # directory
/bug-hunter src/auth/session.ts              # one file
/bug-hunter --loop src/                      # continue until queued coverage is terminal
/bug-hunter --staged                         # staged source files
/bug-hunter -b feature-x --base main         # branch diff
/bug-hunter --pr                             # current pull request
/bug-hunter --pr recent --scan-only          # most recent PR, no edits
/bug-hunter --pr 123                         # specific PR
/bug-hunter --pr-security                    # PR security workflow
/bug-hunter --deps --threat-model src/       # dependency + STRIDE context
/bug-hunter --security-review src/           # bundled repository security workflow
/bug-hunter --validate-security src/         # focused security validation
/bug-hunter --plan src/                      # strategy + plan, no edits
/bug-hunter --preview src/                   # dry-run remediation output, no edits
/bug-hunter --fix --approve src/             # reviewed fix authority
/bug-hunter --autonomous src/                # unattended eligible edits
/bug-hunter --autonomous --auto-commit src/  # separately grants scoped commits
