# bug-fix-brief

This skill writes a structured Bug Fix Brief: root cause, repro steps, fix options and a checklist. Handy once a bug is understood but not yet patched.

## What it does

The skill produces a document under `docs/bfb/` from one fixed template. It first checks which BFB numbers are taken, then asks you for the number, a short kebab-case title, an issue link, the environment and version, observed versus expected behavior, and the file, function and line behind the cause.

The template has six sections: bug, repro, cause, a decision table of fix options with a choice and rationale, a fix checklist, and notes. The cause is capped at three lines, and at least two fix options are expected. Before anything is written, the skill shows the draft and asks for confirmation through AskUserQuestion — create, edit or cancel.

Writing happens only after approval: `docs/bfb/` is created and the file lands as `docs/bfb/BFB-XXX-title.md`. Its allowed tools are Read, Write, AskUserQuestion and Glob, so it never touches your source. If you want something that patches the bug itself, look elsewhere.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill bug-fix-brief -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bug-fix-brief/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bug-fix-brief/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill bug-fix-brief -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bug-fix-brief/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill bug-fix-brief -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bug-fix-brief/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit bug-fix-brief
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bug-fix-brief/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill bug-fix-brief -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --path plugins/developer-kit-core/skills/bug-fix-brief
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bug-fix-brief/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit --skill bug-fix-brief -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/giuseppe-trisciuoglio/developer-kit/tree/HEAD/plugins/developer-kit-core/skills/bug-fix-brief/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- record the root cause before anyone edits the code
- collect repro steps into one ordered list
- compare two fix options and justify the pick
- get a checklist of changes and tests you can verify
- keep BFB numbering sequential with no gaps

## Example prompts
- create BFB for the login crash with a null email
- document the bug fix for issue #1287
- write a bug fix brief for the cause in AuthManager.kt

# Bug Fix Brief (BFB)

## Overview

This skill generates a Bug Fix Brief (BFB): a structured document in `docs/bfb/` that uniformly captures every bug fix with root cause, repro steps, fix options, and checklist.

## When to Use

- User asks to create a BFB
- User wants to document a bug fix in a structured way
- After identifying the root cause of a bug and before implementing the fix

**Trigger:** "create BFB", "document bug", "bug fix brief", "document fix"

## Instructions

### Phase 1: Gather Information

Check existing numbering:
```bash
ls docs/bfb/ 2>/dev/null || echo "Directory does not exist"
```

Ask the user for:
- BFB number (or propose next sequential)
- Concise title (3-5 words, kebab-case)
- Issue link (e.g. #1287)
- Environment (Prod/Stg/Dev) + version
- Observed vs expected behavior
- File/function/line of the cause

### Phase 2: Generate Template

Complete the full BFB template:

```markdown
## BFB-XXX: [Title]
**Reference:** [Issue link]
**Environment:** [Env] `vX.Y.Z`
**Date:** YYYY-MM-DD
---
### 1. Bug
- **Observed:** [wrong behavior]
- **Expected:** [correct behavior]
### 2. Repro
```
1. ...
2. ...
→ [error/output]
```
### 3. Cause
`path/file.ext` — `function()` @ line N
[Why it happens, max 3 lines]
### 4. Decision
| Option | Fix | Choice |
|--------|-----|--------|
| A | [desc] | ✅/❌ |
| B | [desc] | ✅/❌ |
**Rationale:** [why]
### 5. Fix
- [ ] [change 1]
- [ ] [test]
- [ ] [verify repro]
### 6. Notes
[recurring patterns, links, warnings]
```

### Phase 3: Ask Confirmation

Show the generated BFB and ask with AskUserQuestion:
- "Create the BFB"
- "Edit before creating"
- "Cancel"

### Phase 4: Write to Disk

Only after approval:
```bash
mkdir -p docs/bfb
```

Write to `docs/bfb/BFB-XXX-title.md`

## Examples

**Input:** "create BFB for login email null crash"

**Final output:**
```markdown
## BFB-042: Login crash with null email
**Reference:** #1287
**Environment:** Prod `v2.4.1`
**Date:** 2026-05-02
---
### 1. Bug
- **Observed:** App crashes if email field is empty
- **Expected:** Error message "Email required"
### 2. Repro
```
1. Open login screen
2. Tap "Login" without entering email
→ NullPointerException @ AuthManager.kt:34
```
### 3. Cause
`AuthManager.kt` — `validateEmail()` @ line 34
Missing null check on email.trim()
### 4. Decision
| Option | Fix | Choice |
