## What it does

The skill walks through a move into product management step by step. First it asks you to check whether the day-to-day of a PM matches your motivations and natural tendencies. Then it helps pick a route: an internal transfer, an APM program, or an early-stage startup. After that come two more pieces — building product-adjacent experience in your current role, and handling interview questions on product sense, analytics and execution.

The material comes from episodes of Lenny's Podcast and the Newsletter. Among the principles: internal mobility first, since colleagues who already trust your work are easier to convince than strangers; a foundation in engineering or sales; joining a high-growth company in any capacity and moving into product later. A separate section lists common mistakes — chasing the title for status, leaning on theory instead of shipped work, trying to change company and role at the same time.

The skill asks clarifying questions about your current role, the product tasks you already do, and whether you would take a non-PM job at a startup. All 10 insights from 11 guests sit in `references/guest-insights.md`. Install runs through `npx skills add`, or `gh skill install` for GitHub Copilot, and the skill file lands in `~/.claude/skills/breaking-into-product/SKILL.md` or the platform's own folder.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill breaking-into-product -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/breaking-into-product/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/breaking-into-product/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill breaking-into-product -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/breaking-into-product/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill breaking-into-product -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/breaking-into-product/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install RefoundAI/lenny-skills breaking-into-product
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/breaking-into-product/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill breaking-into-product -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/RefoundAI/lenny-skills --path skills/breaking-into-product
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/breaking-into-product/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add RefoundAI/lenny-skills --skill breaking-into-product -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- check whether the PM routine actually suits you
- choose between an internal transfer, an APM program and a startup
- build product experience without leaving your current job
- prepare for product sense and analytics interview rounds
- spot mistakes in your transition plan before you apply

## Example prompts
- help me figure out if I should move into product management from my current role
- which route into PM is realistic for me: internal transfer or a startup
- run a mock product sense interview with me

# Breaking Into Product Management

Strategically navigate the competitive path to your first product management role.

Help the user with breaking into product management using insights from 11 guests and posts across Lenny's Podcast and Newsletter.

## How to Help

1. **Assess role fit** - Help the user evaluate if the daily realities of product management align with their motivations and natural tendencies.
2. **Identify the optimal path** - Determine whether internal transfer, APM programs, or joining an early-stage startup is the most viable route based on their current context.
3. **Build a product track record** - Guide the user on how to accumulate product-adjacent experience and social capital in their current role.
4. **Master the interview process** - Provide frameworks for product sense, analytical, and execution-style interview questions.

## Core Principles

### Prioritize Internal Mobility
Annie Pearl: "I think there's really two paths. I think one is more formal in nature. There are associate product manager programs out there and many scaled companies, Google, Meta. All have APM programs that you can formally apply to."

The most effective way to break into the role is through internal transfers or formal APM programs at companies where you have already built trust.

### Build or Sell First
Kevin Yien: "So for me, the sort of foundational three are going to be engineer, designer or salesperson. I think sales also gets not a bad rep, but a misrepresented reputation in tech where all they care about is quota, it's just about numbers, et cetera. In reality, the best salespeople are the best listeners, the best people at understanding the problem that the customer is having and then translating that into what you can do for them."

Gaining experience in roles that directly build or sell the product provides a necessary foundation for understanding how to convert potential into customer value.
