# web-search

Lets an agent run real web searches: ranked links, snippets, thumbnails, freshness filters. Needs a Brave Search API key.

## What it does

The skill points the agent at `https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/web/search`. Each call carries an `X-Subscription-Token` header and comes back as structured results with title, URL, description, page age, publisher and thumbnail. GET and POST both work; POST suits long queries and big Goggles.

Only `q` is required. The rest of the query string is optional tuning: `freshness` takes `pd`, `pw`, `pm`, `py` or a date range, `result_filter` narrows output to types such as `web` and `videos`, and `offset` walks through pages. SafeSearch, extra snippets and custom Goggles are there too.

No key, no search. You get one at `https://api.search.brave.com`, and access sits in the Search plan. If you want extracted page text or a written answer instead of a result list, that's a different endpoint in the same API — this one returns the search results themselves.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill web-search -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/web-search/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/web-search/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill web-search -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/web-search/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill web-search -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/web-search/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install brave/brave-search-skills web-search
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/web-search/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill web-search -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/brave/brave-search-skills --path skills/web-search
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/web-search/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add brave/brave-search-skills --skill web-search -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/brave/brave-search-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/web-search/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull articles from the past week on a topic
- hand the agent ready-made links with snippets
- limit results to news and videos only
- apply your own ranking with a Goggle
- page deeper into results with offset

## Example prompts
- Search the web for Rust tutorials from the past month, web and video results only.
- Look up “python web frameworks” with strict SafeSearch and list the first five URLs.
- Run a search limited to the last day and add extra snippets to every result.

# Web Search

> **Requires API Key**: Get one at https://api.search.brave.com
>
> **Plan**: Included in the **Search** plan. See https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/app/subscriptions/subscribe

## Quick Start (cURL)

### Basic Search
```bash
curl -s "https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/web/search?q=python+web+frameworks" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "X-Subscription-Token: ${BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY}"
```

### With Parameters
```bash
curl -s "https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/web/search" \
  -H "Accept: application/json" \
  -H "X-Subscription-Token: ${BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY}" \
  -G \
  --data-urlencode "q=rust programming tutorials" \
  --data-urlencode "country=US" \
  --data-urlencode "search_lang=en" \
  --data-urlencode "count=10" \
  --data-urlencode "safesearch=moderate" \
  --data-urlencode "freshness=pm"
```

## Endpoint

```http
GET https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/web/search
POST https://api.search.brave.com/res/v1/web/search
```

**Note**: Both GET and POST methods are supported. POST is useful for long queries or complex Goggles.

**Authentication**: `X-Subscription-Token: <API_KEY>` header

**Optional Headers**:
- `Accept-Encoding: gzip` — Enable gzip compression

## When to Use Web Search

| Feature | Web Search (this) | LLM Context (`llm-context`) | Answers (`answers`) |
|--|--|--|--|
| Output | Structured results (links, snippets, metadata) | Pre-extracted page content for LLMs | End-to-end AI answers with citations |
| Result types | Web, news, videos, discussions, FAQ, infobox, locations, rich | Extracted text chunks, tables, code | Synthesized answer + source list |
| Unique features | Goggles, structured data (`schemas`), rich callbacks | Token budget control, threshold modes | Multi-iteration search, streaming, OpenAI SDK compatible |
| Speed | Fast (~0.5-1s) | Fast (<1s) | Slower (~30-180s) |
| Best for | Search UIs, data extraction, custom ranking | RAG pipelines, AI agents, grounding | Chat interfaces, thorough research |

## Parameters
