# brand-style-guide

Builds or audits a brand style guide across eight sections: story, logo, color, typography, imagery, voice, applications, dos and don'ts. Useful once the identity is done and needs handing off.

## What it does

The skill walks the agent through eight sections. Story covers mission, values and what the brand rejects. Logo system lists every variant with clear space, minimum sizes, allowed color treatments, forbidden ones and file formats. Color documents primary and secondary palettes, neutrals, semantic colors, light and dark variants, values in hex, RGB, HSL, CMYK and Pantone, contrast ratios and allowed pairings. Typography, imagery, voice, applications and the dos and don'ts section follow the same pattern.

The workflow starts with an inventory of finished identity and voice work, then a format decision: PDF, web page, Notion doc or printed book. Drafting follows the template in `references/style-guide-template.md`. Every rule gets stress-tested against a real application example, since rules without examples get ignored and examples without rules do not carry over to new situations. Review comes from the designers, developers and marketers who will actually use the guide, then version control with dates and change notes.

The skill assumes the identity is already designed. Without it, run `brand-identity` first. Voice work lives in `brand-voice`, UI components in `design-standards` or `design-system`. The authors call out one failure mode directly: a static PDF nobody opens. Publish where the team already looks.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-style-guide -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brand-style-guide/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brand-style-guide/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-style-guide -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brand-style-guide/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-style-guide -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brand-style-guide/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install rampstackco/claude-skills brand-style-guide
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brand-style-guide/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-style-guide -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/rampstackco/claude-skills --path skills/brand-style-guide
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brand-style-guide/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add rampstackco/claude-skills --skill brand-style-guide -a opencode
```

## When to use it
- turn a finished identity into a reference document
- document a brand that never had formal guidelines
- find gaps and contradictions in an existing style guide
- prepare a brand book for vendors and new hires
- update the guide after a brand refresh

## Example prompts
- Build a brand style guide from our logo, palette and typefaces, as a web page
- Audit our existing style guide and list the sections that are missing
- Draft the dos and don'ts section with examples for the logo and color

# Brand Style Guide

Document the brand system so other people can use it without ambiguity. This is the artifact that lives longest. Designers, developers, agencies, and vendors will reference it for years. Build it like a reference manual, not a presentation.

This skill assumes the brand identity is designed (run `brand-identity` first if not). The output of this skill is the canonical reference document.

---

## When to use

- Creating brand guidelines for a finished identity
- Documenting an existing brand that has no formal guide
- Auditing an existing style guide for gaps or inconsistencies
- Building a brand book to hand to vendors, partners, or new team members
- Updating a guide after a major brand evolution

## When NOT to use

- The brand identity is not yet designed (use `brand-identity`)
- Brand voice work specifically (use `brand-voice` for the voice doc, then integrate)
- Building UI components (use `design-standards` or `design-system`)

---

## Required inputs

- Finished brand identity (logo, colors, typography, imagery direction, motion principles)
- Brand voice and tone documentation (or sufficient inputs to write a voice section)
- Application examples that show the brand in real contexts
- Decisions on what is mandatory vs flexible vs forbidden
