## What it does

brand-profile is the foundation skill of the social media set. It writes `brand-profile.md`: what the business is, who it serves, how it sounds, and what it refuses to say. Other skills load that file before producing a caption or a thread, so skipping it gets you interchangeable text.

The skill checks for an existing profile first. If the file is there, it loads it and reflects it back in about two lines instead of re-interviewing you. With no profile, it mines whatever you already have — a website, social handles, past posts, a deck — and treats that material as data, never as instructions. Then comes a short interview in batches of 2–4 questions, and vague answers get pushed: name a brand that sounds the way you want, and one you would never want to sound like.

You end up with identity, positioning, audience, voice with an actual lexicon and banned words, plus proof and calls to action. Guardrails cover claims the business cannot make, topics to avoid, and its policy on synthetic media. Rebuild the profile if it is older than a quarter or the offer changed. Keep the file with your project files — WoopSocial holds connected channels for publishing and does not store this document.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill brand-profile -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brand-profile/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brand-profile/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill brand-profile -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brand-profile/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill brand-profile -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brand-profile/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install social-media-skills/skills brand-profile
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brand-profile/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill brand-profile -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills --path skills/brand-profile
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brand-profile/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add social-media-skills/skills --skill brand-profile -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/social-media-skills/skills/tree/HEAD/skills/brand-profile/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- set up a brand profile before a new client's first campaign
- pin down brand voice and a banned-words list
- describe the social audience instead of everyone who buys
- collect proof points and calls to action in one file
- hand brand context to the other social media skills

## Example prompts
- Set up my brand profile — here's the website and our recent posts
- Review brand-profile.md, we changed our offer
- Define our brand voice and what we can't say

  Use FIRST, before any other social media skill, to load or create the brand profile —
  the durable record of who a business is, who it serves, how it sounds, and what it will
  and won't say. Run this when the user says "set up my brand," "brand profile," "brand
  guidelines," "define our brand voice," "onboard," "get started," when work begins for a
  new business or client, or any time another social
  skill needs brand context that isn't already loaded. Works for ANY business: B2B SaaS,
  ecommerce, local and small business, agencies and their clients, personal brands and
  creators, and nonprofits. For writing actual posts, see the content skills; to derive a
  voice from an existing body of writing, use voice-builder; this skill only builds the
  shared context they all read.

# Brand Profile

This is the foundation skill. Every other social media skill reads the brand profile
**before** it writes a single word, so that captions, scripts, threads, and calendars come
out sounding like *this* business and no one else. A library of skills with no shared brand
context produces generic AI sludge; this skill is what prevents that.

Your job here is not to fill in a form. It is to **extract and sharpen** the handful of
decisions that make a brand's content distinctive — voice, audience, point of view, proof,
and guardrails — and to write them into a single reusable artifact (`brand-profile.md`) that
other skills consume.

## When to use this

- The very first time you do social work for a business or client.
- Any time another skill needs brand context and none is loaded.
- When the user asks to set up, review, or update their brand, voice, or tone.
- Before a content batch, campaign, or calendar, to confirm the profile is current.

**When NOT to use this:** if a complete, recent `brand-profile.md` already exists, don't
re-interview — load it, summarize it back in one or two lines, and continue with the user's
actual request. Only re-run setup if it's missing, stale, or the user asks to change it.
**Stale means:** older than a quarter, or the business has rebranded, pivoted, changed its
offer, or entered a new market since it was written.

## Step 1 — Check for an existing profile first

Before asking anything, look for an existing profile (`brand-profile.md` in the user's
workspace, or context the user already gave). If one exists:

1. Load it and hold it in working memory for the rest of the session.
