# brand-motion-guidelines

Produces a fill-in-ready motion guidelines document: principles, duration and easing tokens, a pattern library, logo rules. Useful when animation across a team drifts apart.

## What it does

The skill hands you a template for a brand motion system. Seven sections, written in order: motion principles, timing and easing tokens, a library of entrances, exits and transitions, logo animation rules, motion for feedback states such as loading and error, accessibility, and do/don't examples. What comes out is a structured document, not code.

Tokens carry the system. Durations and curves get named once, then the library and components point back at them. The skill suggests starting points: most UI motion sits between 150 and 400ms, entrances decelerate, exits accelerate and run shorter than entrances. A motion that cannot name its token is a one-off, and one-offs are what make a system look inconsistent.

Before writing anything, the skill asks how large the system should be. A single site or campaign gets principles, tokens and a short library; a product gets the full seven-part document. The accessibility section covers reduced motion, flash limits and focus indicators that must stay visible. You fill the template in yourself — it will not invent values for your brand.

## Requirements
- Works with: Slack

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills --skill brand-motion-guidelines -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills --skill brand-motion-guidelines -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills --skill brand-motion-guidelines -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills brand-motion-guidelines
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills --skill brand-motion-guidelines -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills --path skills/brand-motion-guidelines
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills --skill brand-motion-guidelines -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/iart-ai/freelance-motion-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/brand-motion-guidelines/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- put a brand's motion principles into one document
- define named duration and easing tokens for designers and engineers
- map entrance, exit and transition patterns onto shared tokens
- set clear limits on how the logo may animate
- add a reduced-motion and accessibility section

## Example prompts
- Write motion guidelines for our product: principles, duration and easing tokens, a library of entrances and exits.
- Define easing and timing tokens for our design system and show which one each motion should use.
- Add a reduced-motion section and logo animation rules to the document.

# Brand Motion Guidelines

Author a brand motion system — the document that defines how a brand or product moves, the way mature design systems (Slack, IBM Carbon, Klarna, Material) do it. Output is a fill-in-ready template covering principles, easing/timing tokens, a motion library, logo rules, feedback states, accessibility, and do/don't examples.

## When to use

Use when a brand or product needs a documented motion language, when animation feels inconsistent across a team, when defining named easing/duration tokens for designers and engineers, or when adding a reduced-motion/accessibility standard. The output is a structured doc, not code.

## Decision tree — scope the system, then pick the token

Two judgments: *how big a system does this brand actually need*, and *which token a given motion should use*. Don't build a 7-part system for a landing page; don't ship a one-pager for a multi-team design system.

```
How many surfaces/teams will use this?
├─ One site / one campaign → lightweight: principles + tokens + a short
│   library. Skip deep logo/state sections unless relevant.
├─ A product (app/web) → full 7-part doc; tokens are mandatory.
└─ A brand across product + marketing + broadcast → full doc PLUS a
    Motion Personality preset (see motion-art-direction) so every medium matches.
Picking the token for a given motion:
  duration: larger element / longer travel → longer token
            (instant<fast<base<slow<slower)
  easing:   entrance → decelerate · exit → accelerate (and shorter)
            within-view move → standard · brand moment → emphasized
            continuous loop → linear · playful accent → spring (sparingly)
```
