## What it does

The skill maps Claude Code hook events to Braintrust spans. `SessionStart` creates the root span, `UserPromptSubmit` creates a turn span, and `PostToolUse` records tool activity. It also lays out the session hierarchy, including turns, LLM calls, and `Read`, `Edit`, or `Task` operations.

Sub-agent tracing gets separate coverage. A sub-agent starts with a new `root_span_id`, so its trace is orphaned; the guide suggests matching it through `agentId` or timing, while `SubagentStop` supplies the sub-agent `session_id`. Direct parent-child trace linking should not be expected here.

It includes state locations under `~/.claude/state/`, hook-log checks, and `braintrust_analyze.py` commands. Sending traces requires `TRACE_TO_BRAINTRUST=true` and `BRAINTRUST_API_KEY`; debugging can use `tail`, `jq`, `uv run python -m runtime.harness`, and `BRAINTRUST_CC_DEBUG=true`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill braintrust-tracing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/braintrust-tracing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/braintrust-tracing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill braintrust-tracing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/braintrust-tracing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill braintrust-tracing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/braintrust-tracing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 braintrust-tracing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/braintrust-tracing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill braintrust-tracing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --path .claude/skills/braintrust-tracing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/braintrust-tracing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3 --skill braintrust-tracing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/parcadei/Continuous-Claude-v3/tree/HEAD/.claude/skills/braintrust-tracing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- check whether Braintrust traces are being created
- map Claude Code hook events to spans
- find orphaned sub-agent traces
- match an `agentId` to a child session
- inspect session state and hook logs

## Example prompts
- Check why Braintrust traces are not appearing for this Claude Code session.
- Investigate the link between a `Task` span and a sub-agent trace using `agentId`.
- Show how to inspect `~/.claude/state/braintrust_hook.log` and the session state.

Comprehensive guide to tracing Claude Code sessions in Braintrust, including sub-agent correlation.

```
## Hook Event Flow
| Hook | Trigger | Creates | Key Fields |
|------|---------|---------|------------|
| **SessionStart** | Session begins | Root span | `session_id`, `root_span_id` |
| **UserPromptSubmit** | User sends prompt | Turn span | `prompt`, `turn_number` |
| **PreToolUse** | Before tool runs | (modifies Task prompts) | `tool_input.prompt` |
| **PostToolUse** | After tool runs | Tool span | `tool_name`, `input`, `output` |
| **Stop** | Turn completes | LLM spans | `model`, `tokens`, `tool_calls` |
| **SubagentStop** | Sub-agent finishes | (no span) | `session_id` of sub-agent |
| **SessionEnd** | Session ends | (finalizes root) | `turn_count`, `tool_count` |
## Trace Hierarchy
```
Session (task span) - root_span_id = session_id
|
+-- Turn 1 (task span)
|   |
|   +-- claude-sonnet (llm span) - model call with tool_use
|   +-- Read (tool span)
|   +-- Edit (tool span)
