## What it does

This skill structures the transition from vague curiosity to a defensible research proposal using ten distinct ideation lenses. The Problem-First versus Solution-First framework forces researchers to define who needs the work before building methods, preventing solutions that lack genuine demand.

Other frameworks shift perspective directly. The Abstraction Ladder moves between specific implementations and general theoretical principles. Meanwhile, tension hunting isolates accepted trade-offs like compute efficiency versus model accuracy to turn compromises into actual research contributions. Concepts can also be transferred from fields like economics or physics.

Keep in mind that this skill focuses strictly on early discovery. If you already have a defined research question or need experimental methodology and literature reviews, this tool will not help because it avoids execution workflows.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill brainstorming-research-ideas -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/brainstorming-research-ideas/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/brainstorming-research-ideas/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill brainstorming-research-ideas -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/brainstorming-research-ideas/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill brainstorming-research-ideas -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/brainstorming-research-ideas/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs brainstorming-research-ideas
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/brainstorming-research-ideas/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill brainstorming-research-ideas -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --path 21-research-ideation/brainstorming-research-ideas
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/brainstorming-research-ideas/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs --skill brainstorming-research-ideas -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/Orchestra-Research/AI-Research-SKILLs/tree/HEAD/21-research-ideation/brainstorming-research-ideas/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- frame a research problem before committing to an approach
- identify hidden tensions between performance and computational cost
- generalize a narrow empirical finding into a broader theoretical framework
- borrow mechanisms from economics or physics for machine learning problems

## Example prompts
- Use the abstraction ladder to expand my retrieval-augmented generation problem into a broader research direction.
- Help me identify unresolved tensions between privacy and model utility in federated learning.
- Test whether my current project idea is problem-first or solution-first and find the gaps.

# Research Idea Brainstorming

Structured frameworks for discovering the next research idea. This skill provides ten complementary ideation lenses that help researchers move from vague curiosity to concrete, defensible research proposals. Each framework targets a different cognitive mode—use them individually or combine them for comprehensive exploration.

## When to Use This Skill

- Starting a new research direction and need structured exploration
- Feeling stuck on a current project and want fresh angles
- Evaluating whether a half-formed idea has real potential
- Preparing for a brainstorming session with collaborators
- Transitioning between research areas and seeking high-leverage entry points
- Reviewing a field and looking for underexplored gaps

**Do NOT use this skill when**:
- You already have a well-defined research question and need execution guidance
- You need help with experimental design or methodology (use domain-specific skills)
- You want a literature review (use `scientific-skills:literature-review`)

## Core Ideation Frameworks

### 1. Problem-First vs. Solution-First Thinking

Research ideas originate from two distinct modes. Knowing which mode you are in prevents a common failure: building solutions that lack real problems, or chasing problems without feasible approaches.

**Problem-First** (pain point → method):
- Start with a concrete failure, bottleneck, or unmet need
- Naturally yields impactful work because the motivation is intrinsic
- Risk: may converge on incremental fixes rather than paradigm shifts

**Solution-First** (new capability → application):
- Start with a new tool, insight, or technique seeking application
- Often drives breakthroughs by unlocking previously impossible approaches
- Risk: "hammer looking for a nail"—solution may lack genuine demand
