# box

This skill wires your agent into Box: folders, files, users, groups and collaborations. Handy when you want to browse a shared drive without leaving the chat.

## What it does

The skill reaches Box through the Membrane CLI. It covers files and their versions, folders, web links, tasks, users, groups, events and search. Your agent finds the right action from a plain-language description instead of a fixed command list.

Setup starts with the CLI: `npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest`. Then sign in with `membrane login --tenant --clientName=<agentType>` and run `membrane connection ensure "https://www.box.com/home" --json`; the user approves access in a browser and the reply carries a connection id. A connection stuck in `BUILDING` is polled with `npx @membranehq/cli connection get <id> --wait --json`. Actions run as `membrane action run <actionId> --connectionId=CONNECTION_ID --json`.

You need a Membrane account and network access. On a headless machine there is no browser, so the login command prints an authorization link and you finish with `membrane login complete <code>`. Box credentials are never requested from the user — Membrane keeps them server-side. If no prebuilt action fits, send the call straight to the Box API with `membrane request CONNECTION_ID /path/to/endpoint`.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add membranedev/application-skills --skill box -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/box/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/box/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add membranedev/application-skills --skill box -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/box/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add membranedev/application-skills --skill box -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/box/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install membranedev/application-skills box
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/box/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add membranedev/application-skills --skill box -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/membranedev/application-skills --path skills/box
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/box/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add membranedev/application-skills --skill box -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/membranedev/application-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/box/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- list the files inside a Box folder
- share a document with a teammate
- pull users and groups for one department
- check the version history of a file
- locate a document by search

## Example prompts
- List what's inside the Box folder with the project docs
- Give the analytics group access to the report file
- Find every Box file changed in the past week

# Box

Box is a cloud-based content management and file sharing service. It's used by businesses of all sizes to securely store, access, and collaborate on files from anywhere. Think of it as a more business-focused alternative to Dropbox or Google Drive.

Official docs: https://developer.box.com/

## Box Overview

- **File**
  - **File Version**
- **Folder**
  - **Folder Collaboration**
- **Web Link**
- **Task**
- **User**
- **Group**
- **Event**
- **Search**

Use action names and parameters as needed.

## Working with Box

This skill uses the Membrane CLI to interact with Box. Membrane handles authentication and credentials refresh automatically — so you can focus on the integration logic rather than auth plumbing.

### Install the CLI

Install the Membrane CLI so you can run `membrane` from the terminal:

```bash
npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest
```

### Authentication

```bash
membrane login --tenant --clientName=<agentType>
```

This will either open a browser for authentication or print an authorization URL to the console, depending on whether interactive mode is available.

**Headless environments:** The command will print an authorization URL. Ask the user to open it in a browser. When they see a code after completing login, finish with:

```bash
membrane login complete <code>
```

Add `--json` to any command for machine-readable JSON output.

**Agent Types** : claude, openclaw, codex, warp, windsurf, etc. Those will be used to adjust tooling to be used best with your harness

### Connecting to Box

Use `membrane connection ensure` to find or create a connection by app URL or domain:

```bash
membrane connection ensure "https://www.box.com/home" --json
```
The user completes authentication in the browser. The output contains the new connection id.

This is the fastest way to get a connection. The URL is normalized to a domain and matched against known apps. If no app is found, one is created and a connector is built automatically.

If the returned connection has `state: "READY"`, skip to **Step 2**.

#### 1b. Wait for the connection to be ready

If the connection is in `BUILDING` state, poll until it's ready:

```bash
npx @membranehq/cli connection get <id> --wait --json
```

The `--wait` flag long-polls (up to `--timeout` seconds, default 30) until the state changes. Keep polling until `state` is no longer `BUILDING`.

The resulting state tells you what to do next:
````
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the 32d76e74ce49f66e tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
