# bounce-monitoring-workflow

The skill builds three HubSpot workflows that watch email bounces: it suppresses contacts past a set count, alerts on hard bounces, and flags addresses for a weekly review.

## What it does

This skill sets up bounce handling inside HubSpot so a sender reputation does not quietly degrade. Rather than one workflow with nested branches, it creates three linear ones: hard bounce suppression, removal from marketing email after N bounces, and a review flag for contacts worth a weekly look. Both counts live in `execute.py` as `SUPPRESSION_THRESHOLD` and `REVIEW_THRESHOLD`.

Three scripts do the work. `before.py` lists existing workflows and checks for name collisions. `execute.py` adds the `email_health_flag` property when it is missing and posts three workflows through `POST /automation/v4/flows`, all created disabled so you can inspect them in the UI first. `after.py` confirms they exist and reports whether they are enabled.

You need a HubSpot Marketing Professional or Enterprise plan, a service key with the `automation` scope stored as `HUBSPOT_ACCESS_TOKEN` in `.env`, Python 3.10+ with `uv`, and an admin address or Slack channel for alerts. HubSpot labels the Workflows API as beta, so if a create call starts failing, the manual UI build is the fallback. The scripts leave out the notification actions and the marketing contact status change — add those during review.

## Requirements
- Works with: HubSpot

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills --skill bounce-monitoring-workflow -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills --skill bounce-monitoring-workflow -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills --skill bounce-monitoring-workflow -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills bounce-monitoring-workflow
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills --skill bounce-monitoring-workflow -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills --path skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills --skill bounce-monitoring-workflow -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/TomGranot/hubspot-admin-skills/tree/HEAD/skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- suppress contacts after repeated bounces without manual triage
- get an alert the moment a hard bounce lands
- flag bad addresses and work through them weekly
- check for workflow name collisions before creating anything
- confirm the new workflows actually got enabled

## Example prompts
- Build the bounce monitoring workflows in HubSpot, suppression threshold 2, review threshold 4
- Run `uv run scripts/before.py` and show me which workflows already exist
- Check with `after.py` whether the created workflows are enabled

# Bounce Monitoring Workflow

Protect your email sender reputation with automated bounce detection and suppression. This workflow catches bounces as they happen rather than waiting for periodic cleanup.

## How It Works

| Condition | Action |
|-----------|--------|
| Hard bounce detected | Alert admin immediately, suppress contact |
| Suppression threshold reached (commonly 2-3 bounces) | Auto-suppress from marketing emails |
| Review threshold reached (commonly 3-5 bounces) | Flag for weekly manual review (delete vs. recover) |

## Prerequisites

- HubSpot Marketing Professional or Enterprise plan
- A HubSpot service key (`HUBSPOT_ACCESS_TOKEN` in `.env`; an existing legacy private app token also works) with the `automation` scope (for the API path)
- Python 3.10+ with [`uv`](https://github.com/astral-sh/uv)
- A custom contact property for review flagging (default: `email_health_flag` — the execute script creates it if missing)
- Admin email or Slack channel for hard bounce alerts

## Scripts

Script paths are relative to this skill's directory. Run them from your project directory so `.env`, `data/`, and `reports/` resolve there: prefix each path with wherever this skill is installed (`skills/bounce-monitoring-workflow/` in a clone of the repo).

| Stage | Script | Run with |
|-------|--------|----------|
| Before | [`scripts/before.py`](./scripts/before.py) | `uv run scripts/before.py` |
| Execute | [`scripts/execute.py`](./scripts/execute.py) | `uv run scripts/execute.py` |
| After | [`scripts/after.py`](./scripts/after.py) | `uv run scripts/after.py` |
```
