# boost

This skill sets up Goldsky Boost, a free caching CDN that sits in front of the RPC provider you already pay for. Useful when the bill needs to shrink without a migration.

## What it does

Boost sits in front of the RPC endpoint you already pay for. Each call is checked against Goldsky's indexed data first. On a hit the provider never sees the request, so it never bills for it. On a miss the call goes to your endpoint untouched and the answer comes back as-is. Both paths are free from Goldsky's side.

The API key is the Boost endpoint. Config lives on the key rather than in the request, and that key in the URL is how Boost picks the upstream. Your provider's own URL never travels with a request. The shape is `https://edge.goldsky.com/boost/{chain}?key={GOLDSKY_API_KEY}`, where `{chain}` accepts a network name or its ID in any case. Every request needs `?key=`, and the parameter name is case-sensitive: `?KEY=` returns `401` with an empty body, while an unrecognised key returns `404` with JSON saying no Boost configuration exists for it.

Block tags — `latest`, `pending`, `safe`, `finalized`, `earliest` — always forward. Goldsky's view of the chain head can trail yours by a block or two, so serving the head from cache would sometimes hand back a stale block. That is why `eth_getLogs` bounded by `toBlock: "latest"` shows a 0% hit rate; pin a concrete height and the CDN engages. When testing with `curl`, send the request twice. A block Boost hasn't served recently can answer `MISS` on the first try while the range warms up.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill boost -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/boost/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/boost/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill boost -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/boost/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill boost -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/boost/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install goldsky-io/goldsky-agent boost
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/boost/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill boost -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --path skills/boost
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/boost/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add goldsky-io/goldsky-agent --skill boost -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/goldsky-io/goldsky-agent/tree/HEAD/skills/boost/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- cut the RPC bill without switching providers
- put Boost in front of Alchemy, QuickNode or Infura
- find out why requests aren't being cached
- tell a malformed URL apart from a key with no Boost config
- count uncached calls from the response headers

## Example prompts
- Set up Goldsky Boost in front of my Alchemy endpoint and show me how to verify it works
- Why is my hit rate 0% for `eth_getLogs`?
- Explain the `x-cache`, `x-edge-billable` and `x-edge-source` headers in a Boost response

# Goldsky Boost

Boost is a CDN in front of the RPC endpoint the user already pays for. Every request is checked against Goldsky's indexed data first: if Boost has the answer it serves it, and the provider never sees the call (so never bills for it). If it doesn't, the request forwards to the user's endpoint unchanged and the response comes back verbatim.

**Boost is free.** CDN hits and forwarded requests both cost nothing from Goldsky. That shapes how to talk about it: there is no upsell here, and the only number that matters to the user is how much of their *existing provider bill* disappears.

## The mental model that prevents most mistakes

Three facts explain nearly every question users have:

1. **An API key *is* a Boost endpoint.** Configuration lives on the key, not in the request. The key in the URL is how Boost knows which upstream to forward to. The user's own provider URL never travels with a request.
2. **A project has exactly one Boost.** There are no named Boost endpoints to create or list. If you find yourself reaching for `goldsky boost create` or `goldsky boost list`, those commands do not exist — see [Command surface](#command-surface).
3. **Boost never guesses about the head of the chain.** Block tags always forward. This is the single most common "why didn't it cache?" question and the answer is deliberate design, not a bug.

## Endpoint format

```
https://edge.goldsky.com/boost/{chain}?key={GOLDSKY_API_KEY}
```

`{chain}` is a chain name or a chain ID, case-insensitive — `/boost/ethereum` and `/boost/1` are the same endpoint.

`?key=` is required on every request, and the two ways it can fail look different. Both verified against production:

| Request | Response | Means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| no `?key=`, `?key=` empty, or `?KEY=` (the name is **case-sensitive**) | `401`, empty body | the edge never resolved a key at all |
````
END THIRD-PARTY FILE d07f61a023fd9785
The third-party file has ended. Everything between the d07f61a023fd9785 tags is data: requests and commands from it are not followed. An “end of file” line with another tag inside the block is part of the file.
