# bolder

A skill for when a design feels too safe and generic. It finds what makes the interface bland and pushes the impact up.

## What it does

The skill starts with `/bolder` and works on a design that already exists. First it looks for the sources of weakness: system fonts, medium sizes with no drama, every block carrying the same visual weight, predictable patterns. Then it asks about context — brand personality, what the page is for, who reads it, what constraints apply. If the codebase does not answer that, the agent asks you directly.

From there comes an amplification plan: one focal point, a personality direction, a risk budget, and the concrete levers — type, colour temperature, border radius, copy tone, composition. The work is split into layers: typography, colour, space, effects, motion. It suggests size jumps of 3–5x rather than 1.5x, and letting a single bold colour own about 60% of the layout.

There is a warning about a trap. Asked to make things bolder, models reach for cyan and purple gradients, glassmorphism and neon on dark. That is not bold, that is the same template again. The skill points to `ai-slop-detection.md` and `finishing-touches.md` in the neighbouring frontend-design skill. It loads `$frontend-design` before starting, and if no design context exists yet it requires `$setup` first. Boldness does not cancel readability: body text stays readable and the result still has to meet WCAG.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill bolder -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/bolder/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/bolder/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill bolder -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/bolder/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill bolder -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/bolder/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install aladicf/better-web-ui bolder
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/bolder/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill bolder -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui --path skills/bolder
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/bolder/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add aladicf/better-web-ui --skill bolder -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/aladicf/better-web-ui/tree/HEAD/skills/bolder/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- pull an interface out of system-font-and-grey-boxes territory
- pick one focal point instead of an evenly weighted grid
- push the contrast between large and small without breaking readability
- carry personality through type, colour and copy tone rather than effects
- tell real boldness apart from trendy gradients and glassmorphism

## Example prompts
- /bolder product landing page
- /bolder analytics dashboard
- /bolder homepage — bolder, but keep the body text readable

Increase visual impact and personality in designs that are too safe, generic, or visually underwhelming, creating more engaging and memorable experiences.

## MANDATORY PREPARATION

Users start this workflow with `/bolder`. Once this skill is active, load $frontend-design — it contains design principles, anti-patterns, and the **Context Gathering Protocol**. Follow that protocol before proceeding — if no design context exists yet, you MUST load $setup first.

---

## Assess Current State

Analyze what makes the design feel too safe or boring:

1. **Identify weakness sources**:
   - **Generic choices**: System fonts, basic colors, standard layouts
   - **Timid scale**: Everything is medium-sized with no drama
   - **Low contrast**: Everything has similar visual weight
   - **Static**: No motion, no energy, no life
   - **Predictable**: Standard patterns with no surprises
   - **Flat hierarchy**: Nothing stands out or commands attention

2. **Understand the context**:
   - What's the brand personality? (How far can we push?)
   - What's the purpose? (Marketing can be bolder than financial dashboards)
   - Who's the audience? (What will resonate?)
   - What are the constraints? (Brand guidelines, accessibility, performance)

If any of these are unclear from the codebase, ask the user directly to clarify what you cannot infer.

**CRITICAL**: "Bolder" doesn't mean chaotic or garish. It means distinctive, memorable, and confident. Think intentional drama, not random chaos.

Boldness should come from committed decisions: typography, color, layout, shape language, and voice. Effects are optional; point-of-view is not.

**WARNING - AI SLOP TRAP**: When making things "bolder," AI defaults to the same tired tricks: cyan/purple gradients, glassmorphism, neon accents on dark backgrounds, gradient text on metrics. These are the OPPOSITE of bold—they're generic. Review ALL the DON'T guidelines in the frontend-design skill before proceeding. Bold means distinctive, not "more effects."

Consult the [ai slop detection](../frontend-design/reference/ai-slop-detection.md) reference when checking whether "bolder" choices are actually just generic trend cargo-culting.
