## What it does

This skill injects Playwright automation patterns into the agent context. It covers selector definitions, network state waiting such as `networkidle`, and assertions using Python examples.

The guide ranks selector reliability directly. It treats `data-testid` and ARIA `role` attributes as the safest choices, while XPath is flagged as fragile and worth avoiding. Inside are also patterns for file uploads via `set_input_files`, dropdown handling, and built-in auto-waiting mechanisms.

To run these tests, your project needs Playwright installed in your test environment.

## Requirements
- Works with: Playwright

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill webapp-testing -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/webapp-testing/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/webapp-testing/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill webapp-testing -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/webapp-testing/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill webapp-testing -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/webapp-testing/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills webapp-testing
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/webapp-testing/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill webapp-testing -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path universal/testing/webapp-testing
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/webapp-testing/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill webapp-testing -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/universal/testing/webapp-testing/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- select stable data-testid and ARIA role locators for UI elements
- configure networkidle or custom load state waits for dynamic pages
- automate file uploads and dropdown selections in Playwright
- write visibility and text assertions with expect

## Example prompts
- Write a Playwright test for the login flow using role-based selectors
- Add a wait for network idle and check that the submit button is visible
- Create an upload test using set_input_files and verify the success alert

## Selectors

### Text Selectors
Most readable and maintainable approach when text is unique:

```python
page.click('text=Login')
page.click('text="Sign Up"')  # Exact match
page.click('text=/log.*in/i')  # Regex, case-insensitive
```

### Role-Based Selectors
Semantic selectors based on ARIA roles:

```python
page.click('role=button[name="Submit"]')
page.fill('role=textbox[name="Email"]', 'user@example.com')
page.click('role=link[name="Learn more"]')
page.check('role=checkbox[name="Accept terms"]')
```

### CSS Selectors
Traditional CSS selectors for precise targeting:

```python
page.click('#submit-button')
page.fill('.email-input', 'user@example.com')
page.click('button.primary')
page.click('nav > ul > li:first-child')
```

### XPath Selectors
For complex DOM navigation:

```python
page.click('xpath=//button[contains(text(), "Submit")]')
page.click('xpath=//div[@class="modal"]//button[@type="submit"]')
```

### Data Attributes
Best practice for test-specific selectors:

```python
page.click('[data-testid="submit-btn"]')
page.fill('[data-test="email-input"]', 'test@example.com')
```

### Chaining Selectors
Combine selectors for precision:

```python
page.locator('div.modal').locator('button.submit').click()
page.locator('role=dialog').locator('text=Confirm').click()
```

### Selector Best Practices

**Priority order (most stable to least stable):**
1. `data-testid` attributes (most stable)
2. `role=` selectors (semantic, accessible)
3. `text=` selectors (readable, but text may change)
4. `id` attributes (stable if not dynamic)
5. CSS classes (less stable, may change with styling)
6. XPath (fragile, avoid if possible)

## Wait Strategies

### Load State Waits
Essential for dynamic applications:

```python
# Wait for network to be idle (most common)
page.goto('http://localhost:3000')
page.wait_for_load_state('networkidle')
# Wait for DOM to be ready
page.wait_for_load_state('domcontentloaded')
