## What it does

This skill loads reference architecture for LangGraph directly into your agent. It shows how to initialize a `StateGraph`, define schemas using `TypedDict`, and connect agent nodes. Reducers such as `operator.add` handle list accumulation across turns.

Included guidelines cover conditional routing, cyclic execution, and review loops. Linear chains do not need graph routing. Using this setup effectively requires basic familiarity with state machines and the Python `langgraph` package.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill langgraph -a claude-code
```

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill langgraph -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/langgraph/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills langgraph
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/langgraph/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill langgraph -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/ai/frameworks/langgraph
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/langgraph/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill langgraph -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

## When to use it
- construct stateful multi-agent workflows with StateGraph
- implement conditional edge routing based on node output
- manage shared agent memory using TypedDict and reducers
- set up iterative draft and review cycles with termination rules

## Example prompts
- Build a StateGraph workflow with a researcher and writer node using TypedDict state
- Write a conditional edge function that stops when draft review is APPROVED
- Add a revision counter to ResearchState and limit maximum loops to 3

# LangGraph Workflows

## Summary

LangGraph is a framework for building **stateful, multi-agent applications** with LLMs. It implements state machines and directed graphs for orchestration, enabling complex workflows with persistent state management, human-in-the-loop support, and time-travel debugging.

**Key Innovation**: Transforms agent coordination from sequential chains into cyclic graphs with persistent state, conditional branching, and production-grade debugging capabilities.

## When to Use

✅ **Use LangGraph When**:
- Multi-agent coordination required
- Complex state management needs
- Human-in-the-loop workflows (approval gates, reviews)
- Need debugging/observability (time-travel, replay)
- Conditional branching based on outputs
- Building production agent systems
- State persistence across sessions

❌ **Don't Use LangGraph When**:
- Simple single-agent tasks
- No state persistence needed
- Prototyping/experimentation phase (use simple chains)
- Team lacks graph/state machine expertise
- Stateless request-response patterns

## Quick Start

```python
from langgraph.graph import StateGraph, END
from typing import TypedDict, Annotated
import operator
# 1. Define state schema
class AgentState(TypedDict):
    messages: Annotated[list, operator.add]
    current_step: str
# 2. Create graph
workflow = StateGraph(AgentState)
# 3. Add nodes (agents)
def researcher(state):
    return {"messages": ["Research complete"], "current_step": "research"}
def writer(state):
    return {"messages": ["Article written"], "current_step": "writing"}
workflow.add_node("researcher", researcher)
workflow.add_node("writer", writer)
# 4. Add edges (transitions)
workflow.add_edge("researcher", "writer")
workflow.add_edge("writer", END)
# 5. Set entry point and compile
workflow.set_entry_point("researcher")
app = workflow.compile()
# 6. Execute
result = app.invoke({"messages": [], "current_step": "start"})
print(result)
```

## Core Concepts

### StateGraph

The fundamental building block representing a directed graph of agents with shared state.

```python
from langgraph.graph import StateGraph, END
from typing import TypedDict
class AgentState(TypedDict):
    """State schema shared across all nodes."""
    messages: list
    user_input: str
    final_output: str
    metadata: dict
