## What it does

This skill equips coding agents with core GraphQL patterns. It explains Schema Definition Language (SDL), strongly-typed fields, and resolvers built on `@apollo/server`. The guidance helps the model design schemas that avoid over-fetching.

Included examples demonstrate `query` and `mutation` operations alongside interface definitions and input types. Server setups rely on TypeScript and `startStandaloneServer` on port 4000. Client patterns use `@apollo/client` with `InMemoryCache`.

Because `user-invocable` is set to false, you cannot trigger this skill manually. The assistant loads these rules automatically whenever GraphQL tasks appear in your prompt.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill graphql -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/graphql/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/graphql/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill graphql -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/graphql/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill graphql -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/graphql/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills graphql
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/graphql/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill graphql -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/universal/data/graphql
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/graphql/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill graphql -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**

## When to use it
- Design SDL schemas with nested types and non-null constraints
- Implement TypeScript resolvers for Apollo Server queries and mutations
- Structure Apollo Client requests using parameterized variables
- Define reusable input types for clean mutation signatures

## Example prompts
- Design a GraphQL schema for a blog with users, posts, and nested relations
- Write TypeScript resolvers for creating and updating posts in Apollo Server
- Generate an Apollo Client query with variables to fetch user profiles

# GraphQL Skill

## Summary
GraphQL is a query language and runtime for APIs that enables clients to request exactly the data they need. It provides a strongly-typed schema, single endpoint architecture, and eliminates over-fetching/under-fetching problems common in REST APIs.

## When to Use
- Building flexible APIs for multiple client types (web, mobile, IoT)
- Complex data requirements with nested relationships
- Mobile-first applications needing bandwidth efficiency
- Reducing API versioning complexity
- Real-time data with subscriptions
- Microservices aggregation and federation
- Developer experience with strong typing and introspection

## Quick Start

### 1. Define Schema (SDL)
```graphql
# schema.graphql
type User {
  id: ID!
  name: String!
  email: String!
  posts: [Post!]!
}
type Post {
  id: ID!
  title: String!
  content: String!
  author: User!
  publishedAt: DateTime
}
type Query {
  user(id: ID!): User
  users: [User!]!
  post(id: ID!): Post
}
type Mutation {
  createPost(title: String!, content: String!, authorId: ID!): Post!
  updatePost(id: ID!, title: String, content: String): Post!
  deletePost(id: ID!): Boolean!
}
```

### 2. Write Resolvers (TypeScript + Apollo Server)
```typescript
import { ApolloServer } from '@apollo/server';
import { startStandaloneServer } from '@apollo/server/standalone';
import { readFileSync } from 'fs';
// Load schema
const typeDefs = readFileSync('./schema.graphql', 'utf-8');
// Mock data
const users = [
  { id: '1', name: 'Alice', email: 'alice@example.com' },
  { id: '2', name: 'Bob', email: 'bob@example.com' },
];
const posts = [
  { id: '1', title: 'GraphQL Intro', content: 'Learning GraphQL...', authorId: '1' },
  { id: '2', title: 'Apollo Server', content: 'Building APIs...', authorId: '1' },
];
// Resolvers
const resolvers = {
  Query: {
    user: (_, { id }) => users.find(u => u.id === id),
    users: () => users,
    post: (_, { id }) => posts.find(p => p.id === id),
  },
  Mutation: {
    createPost: (_, { title, content, authorId }) => {
      const post = {
        id: String(posts.length + 1),
        title,
        content,
        authorId,
      };
      posts.push(post);
      return post;
    },
    updatePost: (_, { id, title, content }) => {
````
