## What it does

The skill runs in three passes: check what is outdated, scan for vulnerabilities, then hunt down unused dependencies. Commands are listed per tool — npm, pnpm, yarn, pip, poetry, pipenv — so you pick the ones your project actually uses. Python scanning needs extra tools: `pip-audit` and `safety` come from `pip install`, and `poetry audit` requires the poetry-audit-plugin.

A priority matrix sorts findings from P0 to P4. Critical CVEs get patched the same day, major framework updates are planned over one to two weeks, deprecated packages get a replacement, and unused ones are dropped in the next cleanup PR. There is a decision tree for the grey areas. Another section covers swaps for heavy libraries: `moment.js` for `date-fns` or native `Intl`, full lodash imports for per-function ones, `axios` for built-in `fetch`.

The skill is not meant to be invoked by hand — it sets `user-invocable: false` and `disable-model-invocation: true`, so it loads as a reference with sectioned content instead of filling the context window. Watch the auto-fixers: `npm audit fix --force` jumps to major versions and can break your build, so run the test suite afterwards.

## Install

### Claude Code (native platform)

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill dependency-audit -a claude-code
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `~/.claude/skills/dependency-audit/SKILL.md` — Copy the whole skill folder; for one project use .claude/skills/dependency-audit/

### Codex

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill dependency-audit -a codex
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.agents/skills/dependency-audit/SKILL.md` — For all projects use ~/.agents/skills/

### Cursor

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill dependency-audit -a cursor
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.cursor/skills/dependency-audit/SKILL.md` — Cursor also reads .agents/skills/ and .claude/skills/

### GitHub Copilot

1. **GitHub CLI**
```bash
gh skill install bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills dependency-audit
```

2. **Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.github/skills/dependency-audit/SKILL.md`

### Gemini CLI

1. **Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill dependency-audit -a gemini-cli
```

2. **Platform CLI**
```bash
gemini skills install https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --path toolchains/universal/dependency/dependency-audit
```

### Windsurf (Devin Desktop)

**Manually: put the files in place**
- File: `.devin/skills/dependency-audit/SKILL.md` — The legacy .windsurf/skills/ path still works

### OpenCode

**Skills CLI (Vercel)**
```bash
npx skills add bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills --skill dependency-audit -a opencode
```

### Claude.ai

**Claude.ai**
- Zip the folder and upload it in Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Where a file is given instead of a command, copy the files from the source to that path: https://github.com/bobmatnyc/claude-mpm-skills/tree/HEAD/toolchains/universal/dependency/dependency-audit/SKILL.md

## When to use it
- catch outdated packages before a release
- patch critical CVEs the same day
- drop dependencies nothing imports
- swap `moment.js` for `date-fns` or `Intl`
- trace why a package ended up in the tree

## Example prompts
- audit the dependencies in this project
- find unused packages and tell me what to remove
- check dependencies for vulnerabilities and rank them by priority

# Dependency Audit Skill

## Summary
Systematic workflow for auditing, updating, and cleaning up project dependencies. Covers security vulnerability scanning, outdated package detection, unused dependency removal, and migration from deprecated libraries.

## When to Use
- Weekly/monthly dependency maintenance
- After security advisories (CVE announcements)
- Before major releases
- When bundle size increases unexpectedly
- During code reviews for dependency changes
- Onboarding to legacy projects

## Quick Audit Process

### 1. Check Outdated Packages
```bash
# npm
npm outdated
# pnpm
pnpm outdated
# yarn
yarn outdated
# pip (Python)
pip list --outdated
# poetry (Python)
poetry show --outdated
```

### 2. Security Vulnerability Scan
```bash
# npm
npm audit
npm audit fix          # Auto-fix where possible
npm audit fix --force  # Force major version updates (risky)
# pnpm
pnpm audit
pnpm audit --fix
# yarn
yarn audit
yarn audit --fix
# Python
pip-audit              # Requires: pip install pip-audit
safety check           # Requires: pip install safety
```

### 3. Find Unused Dependencies
```bash
# JavaScript/TypeScript
npx depcheck
# Output example:
# Unused dependencies
# * lodash
# * moment
# Unused devDependencies
# * @types/old-package
# Python
pip-autoremove --list  # Requires: pip install pip-autoremove
```

---

## Audit Commands

### JavaScript/TypeScript/Node.js

#### npm
```bash
# Check what's outdated
npm outdated
# Update within semver range (safe)
npm update
# Update specific package to latest
npm install package@latest
# Check security vulnerabilities
npm audit
# Auto-fix vulnerabilities
npm audit fix
# View dependency tree
npm list
npm list --depth=0  # Top-level only
# Why is this package installed?
npm ls package-name
# Check for duplicate packages
npm dedupe
```

#### pnpm
```bash
# Check outdated
pnpm outdated
# Update all dependencies
pnpm update
# Update specific package
pnpm update package@latest
